-What is the correct way to test the front dampers?
-I've got them off and have had them in all positions while wire brushing them clean. Should I put them on the bench
upright for several days to ensure if there is any air in them it would rise to top prior to testing?
-On the MG forum I read where 20W fork oil is a good fluid for top off.

The BEST way to test them if they're off the car is to them to Peter the Part Pimp. If there's nothing wrong he won't fix them, but if there is, he'll do it and you'll be done wondering FOREVER. (His shock rebuilds are guaranteed for life... as long as HE lives.)

Great year and color! That was my first of many, and the one I'm slowly working on recreating.

There's no definitive test without expensive equipment like a dyno. Look for leaks. Feel for "hitches'' especially when reversing direction. Don't be alarmed if the motion is real stiff at each end of the stroke. With suspension bumpers in place, the pistons never travel the full 40 degrees, so that at the end there develops a ridge like in an engine. The arm should move smoothly in each direction, and the faster you try to move it, the harder it resists. It's acceptable if the arm drops under it's own weight slowly. That's the bypass circuit. It's only when the arm is moving very quickly that the valve springs come into play. They are very reliable unless they leak. Overfilling them can actually cause a leak, so resist overfilling. Only add oil if it has leaked.

I hope you are wire brushing the outside and not the cylinders themselves, WD40 and a toothbrush should take care of the damper cylinders. Mothers aluminum polish does a great job on the outside.
