While checking the oil in the dashpots I felt more resistance in one than the other when I pushed the damper back in. Not a lot but noticable. Wouldn't this cause a problem with efficiency of the carb and balancing with the piston dropping too fast? Can I use a heavier oil in one? Both dampers were replaced a year ago (due to a backfire in the carb blowing the rod through the plastic cap). I'm not experiencing any problems but I am curious what would happen if I switched them. I also have a set of new brass ones so I can do some experiments to see if it will run even smoother.

Damper has little effect on the pistons return to the bridge.

If the same oil is used in both Carbs then install the new dampers and see if the difference is resolved.

You are making a mountain out of a mole hill! The variance in resistance can very well be explained if you are holding one of the dampers at a slight angle and the other straight up and down. Also maybe one piston has more oil in it than the other?

If it ain't broke...

The dampers are designed to use 20wt oil only. Also remember when it all gets warm, the oil thins out and it will all be about the same.

I say just leave it be. If it's running well, that's all that matters.
