Hey all,

I just noticed nasty damage of my paint. It's in front just next to the engine cover (or whatever the big plate in front is called).

Any suggestions on how to repair this acceptably?
 
Looks like it could be rust underneath. Unless you get it professionally repaired soon, I would at least clean that paint off and maybe primer it to prevent more damage. Primer can always be sanded off later when a proper job is done.

If you wish to primer it, take the smallest area possible and cover as much as necessray of the rest of the car to protect it from overspray.
 
I'm sure that you are going to find rust under there. Problem is, once this begins to happen it will just get worse. check the rest of the car for any bubbles, cracking, hazy spots, etc. any little imperfection in the paint will let in the moisture and allow the rusting process to begin.
 
Ok. And then what should I do exactly? Clean it until all rust is gone and then put some protection on it? What kind of protection works best? Primer is a bit too general?
 
Go down to the auto parts store and buy a bottle of Ospho. It is a green liquid and comes in a quart size. After you clean it down to the rust and sand as much rust off as possible, paint the spot with Ospho and it will neutralize the rust. It will turn black and maybe have a whitish cast to some of it. Then paint the spot with primer. Dont let the Ospho get on any other part of the paint.

The cracking to me looks like a possible previous bondo repair if I am looking at your photo right. If it is bondo, clean that all out to make sure it wasn't put over rust and do the previous. Or take it down and get it done professionally. In either case the fender will have to be touched up professionally to hide the repair completely.

If you are referring to the cracks, I agree with Bob. Too much or improperly applied Bondo. I also second his suggestions on a fix.
