Dale's not the only one who paints parts

Dale,

You have raised the bar. Since I watch your posts daily and notice that you paint every nook and cranny after proper preparation, I decided to paint my shaved and cc'd cylinder head prior to installation.

Before and after shots, with masking tape still on. No touch till tomorrow.

BTW, I used High Temp Ceramic paint, good up to 1,200 degrees. Yeah, right...sounds good for now....we'll see.

Not sure about a name yet Ron, but I'm pretty sure that it won't be Amos II.

I was calling it testy until I got my little vacuum leak under control. Very small split in line to cannister. I almost missed on the third inspection, but given enough aerosol carb cleaner and the right temperature to expand things, all came out well.

Hey Paul,

Am I dreaming or did you just very expertly paint
a TR6 head and will be forwarding down here for Amos?

Wow!! What a grand gift.

I will gladly begin to pull the Crypt Car's head and
sent it to you to make it mechanically functional.

THANKS!!!! I'm happy I could be the inspiration for
the positive positive. I also use the high temps ceramics
when I cannot powder coat.

PS: TRBill- my "special blend" of acrylic modified, two
component expoxy paint now has over 60 hours use on my
prop and still going strong. It better be for $125 per
quart!!

My father in law taught me all about "Navy corners". He was a SeaBee and they did everything, but while in port, ship painting was top of the list.

do you think there will be problems getting paint in the oil?

Beaulieu

I just want the head of mine to look half as good as your before shot! I am about to pull the head out and now you have me thinking about painting it...

Heh, heh, heh! I'm dumb, but not that dumb. I had all internal areas covered with painters tape.

Paul, your skill sets are improved greatly
this past year but they ARE wandering off
center a bit and entering MY world of colors and
wacky thinking.

But than again, your generosity seems to know
no bounds. I know that was a heap of prep work.
All that work and then to send it down here to Puerto
Rico to install on Amos..............

I am speechless.

dale

You probably will be speechless in a few weeks when you see the pictures of it on my engine.....

Maybe the next one will be yours. This head will not fit your early block you know.

And here I was hoping year 2007 would shatter all
existing Crypt Car records and establish a new base line:

More than 300 miles (non-repair related)driven in year 2007
More than 50 consecutive miles driven without a breakdown
More than one hour driven without a breakdown.
Two consecutive weeks not up on blocks- car functional.
Two consecutive months with under $1,000/mo. for parts.
One month with no new, expensive auto tools purchased.
Take Wendy for a drive and all four wheels remain on the car.

We can all dream!!!!

It's not 2008 yet, so what's the worry?

Unless you guys use a different calendar in Puerto Rico.

You don't use that Mayan thing that ends in 2012, do you? If so, you better get to work if you want to enjoy Amos for a while.

Paul- Did you do the painting yourself?

If so,

1. What solvent liquid did you use as your final wipe clean?
2. What if any primer did you use?
3. How many coats of final color?

Looks fantastic.

d

Dale,

I did paint it myself. The head was cooked in a cleaning tank before and after the machining work. The machine shop applied the high temp gray finish shown in the first picture. They said that it cold be painted right over and recommended the Dupli-Color High Heat Ceramic paint that I used.

I washed it down with a solvent based prep cleaner, just to get any oil residue off of the coated surfaces.

I applied about five total coats, one every 12 minutes and all within the one hour window recommended on the can. Setup dry within a day and not be be installed for seven days, so it's not for a hurry up rush job.

Paul,

You should be satisfied with the Dupli-Color High Heat
ceramic. It is a good product

That particular paint does need the week to fully harden.
It is easy to scratch and/or chip until it cures out.

I would put the head in the sun to get that little extra
cure from slightly higher temp. Does R.I. have sun this time
of year?

Can you guess what Brand and color DPO Pedro used on my
engine's head? Yup- K-Mart black.

d

Yeah, we have sun. I'm just too lazy to carry it back up the steps and outside again.

Paul, could you refresh my memory on what was done to the heads? Springs, seats, guides, seals, retainers, valves, etc. Looks like someone took some time cleaning up the combustion chambers. I'll even venture, just by looking at the pictures, that they cc very close if not exact to each other.

Thanks.

Ron,

Everything that you mentioned except for seals, as well as complete cc on all cylinders and .080" taken off in addition to the estimated .010" that was off when I bought it.

Bob at Motor Tech in New Bedford, MA does a lot of heads for Triumphs in the Boston area and for the amount and style of driving that I do, he did not recommend seals, just the new knurled valve guides.

The chambers are nicely cleaned and there are no rough edges, but they are not highly polished, again for reasons that Bob decided upon.

I should have between 8.75 and 9.0 to 1 compression when it's all back together, which is all I wanted at this time.

It should give me a bit more zip on the street with no pinging issues on todays gas as well as allowing me to take more off in the future if I decide that I want it even higher when I do the bottom end someday.

You can take it off easily, but it's kind of hard to add it back.
