Besides sneaking my "250" head into the Kitchen Aid in the middle of the night so my wife won;t find out, does anybody have any backyard ideas for cleaning a cylinder head, or should i just spend the 45 bucks and have it hot tanked?

Trust me, she'll find out. She stench will rat you out.

Several years ago my brother-in-law had a similar epiphany and decided to "degrease" a BMW 2002 block in the dishwasher (while the parents were away for a few days).

The whole house stank like grease/gunk for days. The dishwasher was trash.

Have it hot tanked.
 
Diesel fuel makes a dandy crud cutter.

Go buy a large rubbermaid tub of adequate size to hold the head, and a gas can.

You 3/4 fill the gas can with diesel. Take it home and slosh some in the rubber maid tub. Clean to your hearts content. Let it sit for a little bit, and return the diesel fuel to the gas can for future reuse.

Lacquer thinner makes an even better cleaner, but it's more expensive and evaporates a whole lot quicker. It also eats some plastics, making a remarkable mess.
 
Not to mention:
"Lacquer thinner makes an even better cleaner" But it is also highly volitile! ANY and I mean ANY ignition source after the fumes have filled your garage and BYE BYE garage! Not to mention, Do you like to get high on fumes and such cause a few minutes of "Washing parts" and youll be higher than a kite! IF you decide to use Lacquer thinner Please do it outside and in a breeze and stay upwind. B.T.W. I myself wouldn`t be sticking MY hands in Lacquer thinner. Nope NO WAY!
my Vote is have it Hot tanked.
Besides, Hot tanking it will remove any and all grease. Not to mention the rust thats inside that you yourself can not remove.

$45 to hot tank it? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/iagree.gif Save yourself a lot of grief and have it done right.
 
Dunno if this applies to the TR250 head or not; but on the TR2-4A heads there is a cast aluminum core plug that will be damaged by the hot tank process and need to be replaced. Some people have regretted having their heads hot tanked for that reason.
