No, really, they do. Look at mine. I took off the carbs and head today, and this is the fun I found. Plus, I hurt myself pulling the &&*%^& head. Oh, goody.

I've seen much worse!

Gesh, Miss Agatha looked much worse than that when I opened her up, well the doner engine.

Nice.

Is it just me, or is that a Nylatron kingpin bushing stuffed into the back of your smog pump mounting hole?

That's funny! Could be.... It's the bushing that came with the upgraded GM alternator - who knows what they're using in Detroit these days?

I'm concerned about the crap caked onto the top of the cylinders, but I've been hearing that I should just clean it up and drive away - stop being a sissy about a little carbon buildup.

Yeah that doesn't look terribly bad to me either, just some carbon, that's normal, none seem to be wet with oil, so that's good. Oh and cylinders do suck, but only half the time /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Thanks for the good news. The car isn't burning oil, but it is consuming oil - probably bad valve seals, which is the main reason I pulled the head itself. No obvious scoring of any kind when I run my finger along the cylinder walls, and you right, Hap - there was no oil to speak of on them.

All the cylinders look good to me. This is normal combustion residue and can be cleaned off without problems. While your that close, make sure the coolant passages are cleaned out so you don't get hot spots upon restart. Hope this helps. Good Luck Dave

It helps a lot, and the nervous novice in me thanks you!
