Cylinder head rebuild

If I have new valve seats installed (hardened on exhaust) how hard is it to lap the valves, etc? I'm pretty certain I have manganese guides already installed.
I'm thinking I'll have them install the seats and I'll purchase the valves, springs, etc and re-assemble myself.

Thoughts? I was thinking valve lapping involved some 'compound' and a suction-cup on a stick tool..and some elbow grease(?)

Thanks all!

You should find that the local folks will do that rather cheeply.

Well, one would think so.
I was told "worst case" (All new valves, new guides, new springs, surface milled..)valves lapped.
$1100 (-$75 if the head did not need skimmed)

I almost fell over. It did include magnaflux and pressure test...
You can get a new alloy head on e-bay for $1000, Minisport and MiniSpares have complete Stage 2 heads for <$1000
More on my budget is the MiniSpares rebuilt head for $260USD + Shipping..

So..I guess I'm doing it myself. Or buying a re-manufactured head.

I just had my done by the local Brit guys here in Portland, OR and the total bill (which I have in my hands) was $373.76. That was "Labor rebuild head, install hardened seats, surface head, hot tank and clean, install double valve springs, assemble head". Somewhere around here I have another receipt with the new valves on that reciept. So once you add those in, it was a little more but nothing like what you're talking about!

Last one that I had magnafluxed, new seats, guides, skimmed, was a touch over $300. Are you sure you were note quoted porting work as well?

I had a Spitfire head done last year by a well known local shop. I has already bought all the parts and carried. Cost $200 labor to clean, install valve guides, assemble and do a three angle valve job. It already had hardened seats, so no new seats. I don't recall the cost of the parts, but probably <$300.

Think you best try another shop.

That price is way way way too high, $300 is a more reasonable target.

Wowsa - that is way out of line. You should be able to find a better price in the Houston area with a reputable shop.

Yeah..that is why I told them 'no thanks'..
Really..a completely refurbed head shipped from the UK is only $400!! For that matter a Stage 2 head with porting was about $1000!!

Geez. Oh well..off to find another shop. If anyone knows of one in Houston they'd recommend..please PM it to me.
Thanks
