I wasnt real happy with that particular job, I thought it might be easier to do a bunch of holes and then connect the dots so to speak, Usind a template or something in the circle would have made a better hole....Live and learn I suppose /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Got it all. 100 Clecos for 39 bucks plus a pair of pliers.

Now, on the plasma torch. I got a nice American made unit (or so they said, Powermax 380). In my mind's eye, what can I use to protect the underlying metal? Like sheets of that old asbestos siding you see on older homes? Lots of questions. Just need to cut up a bunch of metal before I tackle the floors.

Bill, The plasma flame only comes out about 1/2" and the slag is blown through, I dont think you really need anything behind it, Unless there might be a combutsable around, But then again its like a welder or other cutting torch.....keep the fuel's away.
Did you get one with a compressor or without? Mine is without, But you only need about 25psi. where mine ir also regulated on the unit.
Yes practice is the ticket, I love mine, I wish I had more things I could do with it.

Well having a plasma torch is OK, but I would not use it on a floor removal job with the body on frame. If you have not yet done so, take a look under the car. The floor sets less the 1/2 inch and in some places 1/8 inch off the frame. Then there is the trailing arms just below the rear floor. Then there is the gas and break lines, not to mention the gas tank.
Your ability to slide any plasma flame proof material will necessitate lifting the body.
In my opinion, you would have been better of with an air powered 3" cutoff grinder and perhaps an air powered metal shear. I've done fine with just the cutoff grinder and large tin snips.
Not as much fun as the plasma cutter, but then again less chance of setting the place on fire, or cutting more then you wanted.

I plan on using the plasma torch primarily to cut out the new floor pan, that is, cut off anything that I don't plan on using. I am not going to replace the entire pan, just the 80 or 90% interior. I plan on keeping the entire perimeter intact and weld to it. Will replace the area around the tranny so I can use all the new nuts to bolt down my tunnel cover. May well take out the gas and brake lines and tank. Remember, I will be MIG welding the new floor back in and creating as much heat and longer lasting heat. Gotta go slow, real slow.
I will use a cutoff blade in the critical areas over the frame and around the mounting brackets below. Probably can cut well over half with the torch.
