Cut off switch wire

Can someone explain the pupose of the small wire that is near the cut off switch in the trunk of a
BJ8. Mine has always not been connected to anything and all works fine. If I do touch it to any metal part in the trunk it will kill the engine.

There is a smaller terminal on the cutoff switch that this wire is normally connected to. When the switch is off, the small terminal is grounded & the other end of this wire grounds the ignition points. It is the second white/black wire on the point side of the ignition coil. A theft preventive. Engine won't start with switch off even if the battery were jumpered.

The battery ground switches are not too reliable & if they go wrong the ignition is disabled even when the battery is connected. Some folks just leave this wire off of the switch for reliability reasons. The bare end of this wire should be insulated from grounding to prevent unintended engine stops.
