I've noticed a lot of engine builds currently going on, across all the forums.
My question is, how many of you keep a spare engine built and ready to go?

That would be my hope and wish to have a rebuilt, but I do have two "spare" engines, one known and running (but a bit tired) and one that looks decent but which I have never had running!!
 
Working on it. Engine sourced, running when removed.
 
Really, mine is near Atlanta. It is a MK 1 Midget engine with the upgrades. ie cooper S head and such.
 
Mine is in a garage where it has been since it was pulled over a year ago. Same place I got my trailer. I drool over that 295 head.

I like to have lots of spares. I've got a couple of running 1275's, one 948, and two 1098's built at the moment. I'll be doing another 1275 shortly, fairly "hotted up". Probably in the 110 HP range.

Yea, and we will if and when I get to my sisters again. That place is so booring.
 
The long term plan is to rebuild the original 948 from the Tunebug to have handy, though I'm counting on my Hap-built 1275 to be the only motor I need for a while. Wouldn't mind finding another ribcase, though.

I inherited my dad's hoard so I have a 1275 and a smaller a-series (not sure if it's 948 or 1098) in the garage. I've never touched the small engine. It's been sitting in the same place for about 20 years I would guess.

The 1275s all saw regular rotations in our cars. My dad never quite figured out the cooling systems so blown head gaskets were a regular occurence.

Neither of those engines are what I would call built and ready to swap but I have been toying with the idea of taking the 1275 and building it as a back up, ie. cleaned, magged, fresh rings and bearings, nothing over the top. My midget is now my daily driver so if the engine in the car should turn south I need a parachute.

There went ten years between moving to Denmark and getting my frogeye and all the parts over here. The parts were sitting at my moms house. (she loved it) I unfortunately only have two engines, the original 948, .060 over and pocketed for the 1275 cooper-s head, and the 10CC .040 over and with a selection of three 295 heads, one of which nicely ported. Oh, and I also have a selection of 5 ribcase boxes, one of which is a JK out of the old HP car. NONE of these parts are in reasonably usable condition except maybe a couple gearboxe... not the JK.
 
I still have a running 1275 I pulled it this time last year. I have kept it all together and not taken any parts from it while installing my new motor.
 
When they were daily transporters there was always a "fresh" B series and one Lotus T/C on stand-by. An early B gearbox as well. I should shortly be back to that habit as the garage project progresses. The tired ones are here along with a few Alfa ones. I should get cracking on the 2L Alfa lump first, I've about ground the 1750 into an oil burner after seven years of daily use at my hand. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif
 
Doc, I think the only vehicles here that don't have a spare engine ready are the Volvo 850, and the stupid Fiat. Seeing that the Fiat has a somewhat odd engine in it ( a 1300 with the rotation reversed), it probably won't <u>get</u> one, either. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
