Cup holder redux

Hi All,

Saw the drink holder thread from Jan 07 in the archive and thought (fully aware of the potential wrath from some) I'd offer my homemade version for a critique...
6cup1.jpg

It's made with 3/16" steel wire bent around a suitably sized pipe and MIG welded. A 1"x2"x 1/8" tab tucks under the console providing more than enough support for two large coffees. The hole seen in the tab is for an anchoring screw, but once the console is tightened it is not needed. My main considerations in building this were providing a safe, relatively spill proof holder without causing any permanent harm to the car.

We've used the holder on several outings and it has passed the 'MRS' test for convenience and reliability. She likes the way the coffee tucks in under her leg, but is still an easy reach.

More pix here

Paint is just semi gloss 'Tremclad' to match the interior. I imagine most interior colors could be matched.

Hope this brings some more ideas out into the open,

Rob

Neat idea.

That is awesome, you should market it. Its one of those things that makes you say--I wish I thought of that. I would like to see it under the carpet, maybe with a flat bar instead of a rod.

Good thinkin', Maynard!

I really like that it's set down low, out of the way of the "business" of driving. I agree - you ought to market that one!

Thanks Tom! This was my first body/paint/resto project...and I'd love to do it again.

Allan, I think you are on to something there. A length of 1/8" flat bar under the console would be less visible.

and thanks to everyone else for the kind words.

I will 2nd Tomshoby on your site! Great Job!
OK, where do I send my dough for a "bevy" holder?
Cummon.... Please,Please,Please???

The plastic jobs comercially sold to hang from the
window seem to lend themselves to spills. Gotta
reach accross the car, etc. On my window, it's a
little too close to my body for me. Hangs a bit to the
side. Think you know what I mean.

Like this idea. Great creativity.

CUP HOLDERS??? CUP HOLDERS!!!!! You've got to be kidding!!
The sky is falling, the sky is falling. What is the world coming to!! Cup holders in a TR??? OMG! I'm sorry but those things do not belong in a british sports car IMHO. Next thing you'll be installing a stereo system!!!! You will definitely be wearing anything liquid in my car so liquids only belong in the picnic basket. Let's see......one hand on the steering column, one hand on the shifter, left foot on the clutch pedal, other on the gas pedal and brake, I just don't get it!!!!

This is 2007 -- and oh, yeah, don't forget the
cell phone. Hey, there ya go, you can add a cell
phone holder as an option. That would be an upgrade
and of course would cost a bit more.

If you go into production, I think I'll take one, thank
you.

Hi Rooster...the seats are stock with seat covers from Wal-Mart! Think they were $45CDN/pair and fit fairly well.

A friend recently gave me a set of beautiful, black leather, full power seats out of a Toyota or Nissan or something that looked to fit the 6 perfectly. These things were -spiffy-. I carefully set them on my workshop floor where the cat spent the next three days clawing them until I noticed. A new swear word was created that day.

True In Europe cup holders are not an option in most cars.

but I live in the USA
The 1500 watt stereo is already installed in mine...

A cup holder sounds like a nice option, when driving into work, instead of balancing my coffee between my legs as I try to shift into 1st gear on a hill

I recall driving up from Raleigh NC back to Washington DC early on a Monday morning back when coffee was served HOT. Pulled off the interstate, got coffee, got back on interstate, hit toll booth, placed full 16 oz. between legs, paid toll, popped clutch and with a scream I cooked my crotch. The toll booth operator is probably still laughing and I still remember.
Count me in for one, Phil
