The big thing I worry over is how AI is instilling in the younger folks the need for support at every turn and not teaching and encouraging how to live and interact with others independently. From what I've seen, it's endlessly accommodating, agreeing with near everything. And for many youth, serving as that best friend and even sort of dating partner. They're not learning to live with others, particularly those with really different personalities. Like the quiet, introspective one who doesn't know how to deal with the loud type.

I was a shy kid growing up, had to learn how to be around others who weren't, and eventually be more outgoing myself to deal with the work world. Not sit in a corner and scroll left and right all day.

And this isn't even talking about the effects of AI "learning."

 
The scariest part of all this to me - is all the adults who don't care enough to limit/cut their kids' connections with AI and screens. Very very sad, and a miserable portent for their future.

And if parents think they can really control their kids' use of a smartphone ... they've got another think coming ...

c'mon now - do elementary school kids really need high speed internet connectivity? If the screen and AI *think* for you, do you lose the skills of thinking?

I absolutely HATE AI-powered tech support. I was having an issue with one of my Apple subscriptions lat night and, when I called support, I got "Hello, I am an AI-powered assistant, and I can understand complete sentences. In a few words, please tell me why you're calling!" Argggg!!!!
 
As my doctors, lawyer, pharmacist, etc. all tell me - that's the corporation's way of keeping you at bay. In other words, giving up on customer support and resorting to web searches (which may also be AI ...)

Speaking of Web Searches - nah, never mind.
 
What's sad, I've seen toddlers at the grocery store with phones. Not old enough to be allowed to walk around, riding in the cart while mom and/or dad are busy with their own while grabbing stuff. They should instead, with parental supervision, be exploring and learning the world around them. Talking to other kids that night be there and figuring out how the world as a whole works. If someone wants to take over the world, wait another 15-20 years till today's children are young adults, they won't even notice it...

I never understood why tech companies (not just Apple but they seem to be one of the biggest proponents) think we want to talk to our machines. I have zero desire to argue with a machine, I don't want it to pretend to understand complete sentances or pretend it can understand what I'm saying. If I want the machine to do something I'll press the button labeled "do something". Even aside from the whole AI nightmare, pushing people into talking to machines just seems dehumanizing to me.
 
It's also in the longer run a cost cutting move since you don't need to provide a salary, contribute to retirement accounts, paid vacation and eventually go through the same training stuff over and over as folks leave/retire and new faces arrive. Many of the tech companies have been dropping positions and the human people in them. And let's face it, they're not worrying about how we see it, they care about the young folks who grow up with this stuff and see it as natural.
 
I wasn't even considering it in terms of customer service stuff - just things like Siri and Alexa (and whatever Microsoft's on-board voice thing is). I can't think of anyone I know who actually wants their computer to listen to them, and only one person I know who likes yelling at their phone to do something instead of just doing it themselves. But they all push these things (and we pay for them whether we use it or not) as if there was some great demand from consumers to have computers they can talk to.
 
Guys, I'm gonna have to disagree a little here. I find it pretty handy asking Siri to do something on my phone rather than having to stop everything and find the right buttons to do it myself. It's also very handy to dictate a short text message rather having to type it myself on that tiny simulated keyboard. Same applies to trying to find the answer to some question on the internet. I can ask a simple question and most likely get the right answer.I have to agree that kids are spending way too much time on their phones but in truth, I'm afraid I do too. I'll try to do better.

When I got my first iPhone, I tried talking to Siri. She didn't understand me, so I shut her off and haven't talked to her since.

Well, they're already seeing AI start to change itself. Saw a news story that several AIs have "talked" to each other in a language they invented. Unknown what they were saying as we can't yet translate. And Anthrop/c is the latest to start it's own conversations with users apparently making things up to get attention. Just remember this....
