Crypty Died Again

This wretched, wretched, nasty, SOB car!!

I took Wendy out for her first real trip
in Crypty since he's been restored.

We had a nice drive maybe 5 miles from home,
then 6 miles in another direction and then
Crypty began to stutter and stall at a stop
light maybe 3 miles from home.

Barely made it into the garage when the engine
stopped deader than a used car salesman's heart.

Popped the hood and gasoline was pouring out of
the carb closest to the firewall. These are brand
newly restored Jeff Palya carbs. The fuel pipe is
tight as can be. The leak is on the other side of
the carb. Please view this photo and maybe suggest
something to try before I have to start ripping apart
Jeff's carbs?

Lucky we were not both burned alive!!

Thanks,
Dale

Dale, I agree with Andy. I could very well have happened that way.

However, is it possible that the neoprene fuel line may be leaking ahead of the clamp? Can you start the car and watch to see if fuel is coming out of the line and running or spraying along the bottom of the rear carb?

It could be the float valve stuck open - crap in it, float dragging, float leak (if can type). Fuel pump pressure too high? Shouldn't be over several pounds for our wimpy engines/carbs.

Good luck! Keep plenty of beer in the boot to put out the fire and/or bribe your way home.

Dale, why is there so much slack in your choke cable? Is your choke stuck open?

Ok, I let the engine cool down. Then....

Started right up on first crank. I let the engine
warm to 180 degrees, idle at 1000 rpms. Five minutes
in garage at various rpms manual.

No gasoline leak.

So I an dumbfounded and afraid to take the car out.

Paul, Immediately as the car died, I was able to quickly
see the leak was NOT from the fuel supply line. I backed
away as gasoline was dripping on very hot engine components.

Fuel filter is clean as a whistle.

clueless,

Run your finger across the bottom of the bowl. The plug under there is famous for leaking. Just a new O-ring would fix it if that were the case.

I was wondering the same thing but assumed it was kinked from manually pulling on the choke lever on the carb.

Sorry Dale I have no clue.

You never should have told the car you were thinking about the suspention. They don't like that.

Dale, we need to consolidate the threads to one for tools and one for the leaky carb. You're getting answers on both again and you may miss something or confuse someone by having both going at the same time.

Dale and Paul
I agree we need one post only. Paul, on the other one you said one time only problem.I am sure that's true so Lets just monitor this thing and see how it goes. Dale, try this car outside the garage a few times in the next day or so. Keep this thread going guys. Dave

And yet the tale of the crypty car continues. Will the crypty car prevail or will the crypt master reign supreme?
So far, after long fought battles with the famous crypty car, Although for the battle of the clutch he did have to recruit an extra combatant, the crypt master and his combatants have won every battle dedcisevly. One of the carburator clan are now gathering troops and preparing for battle.
Stay tuned for the on giong saga of crypty and the crypt master.

Sorry dale I just couldn`t resist {The Devil made me do it}

Yup Kerry, Crypty keeps on fighting me.

et al:

At least this time I didn't have to call Wendy
to come get me.

Choke cables are brand new. Ten thumbs Dale installed
them therefore the kinks. Chokes work just fine- look
ugly though.

Paul- I didn't find about the fuel leak until AFTER
Crypty died pulling into the garage. Wendy thinks I
turned the engine off. She does not know it died.

When I pulled the air filter box off, the throats of
both carbs had soot on the big pistons that go up and
down and move the needle. From sitting at the funeral
home for 6 six weeks besides a busy highway. Therefore,
it is probable the soot caused the one carb to flood.

I'll start at point zero again and drive Crypty a
few hundred yards at a time with a fire extinguisher
beside me.

Maybe I'll start work on the front suspension rebuild
while I'm testing Crypty's reliability factor. I best
NOT install the new wool carpet interior for a while
with the danger of a sudden fire present.

BLARGH!!!

Dale, was looking at quotations earlier. Found one for you from good old Winnie C:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.[/QUOTE]

It's running. You can get all 4 gears. That *IS* an improvement, and don't forget that fact...

VERY good point Alan.

Definitely sounds like something made the needle valve for the float stick. I would be very surprised if Jeff didn't replace thouse lower O-rings with his rebuilds.

I've seen 'silt' pass right through fuel filters and eventually accumulate enough to stick a needle, then fall out once the fuel pressure stops (engine off in this case). The rough running prior to shut down was probably a sudden 'fuel rich' condition as the needle stuck.

Could be a foretelling of larger rust particles in the tank readying to breaking loose. Keep an eye on the fuel filter. You might by couple extra too. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Dale-

You need to pull the engine. Just kidding!!

But I think the comments on a stuck needle valve earlier, potentially caused by a dirty tank or some gunk is the most likely culprit.

I had the exact thing on my TR4. When it happens, gas will gush out of the carb vent. Also, I think the rear cylinders get flooded with too much gas so that is why the engine acts up.

Your comment on gas pouring out - was that accurate? Pouring as opposed to the occasional drip? If it is just dripping I'd suspect a small leak like a hose or o-ring but pouring out really says to me its the needle valve or float inside the carb misbehaving. With a stuck valve, the problem can also disappear when the engine is shut down and fuel pressure goes to zero.

You had over 200 replies to the last trials on the tranny, I sure hope this thread doesn't go that route - and I'm real hesitant to offer advice. But here's some anyway!

1) I would change out the fuel filter, regardless of how clean it looks. Its cheap and simple insurance.

2) IF, and I emphasize IF, you do take apart the carb to look at float and needle valve: keep in mind that there exists a needle valve which has a built in metal screen that can help prevent this problem. I'm not saying buy it now, but if you eventually go that route, keep it in mind. I recall it is normally an MGB part, but it is for a Zenith Stromberg carb and will work. I use them and they are fine on my TR4. I can probably track down the supplier and part number if I look hard enough, but I don't have it handy right now. Just a thought - no need to tear into anything at this point.

I feel your pain!

So Doc Bill..............

NOW you tell me Triumphs are prone
to exploding into balls of flaming infernos.

Well, that's just GREAT news to learn.

Blargh!!! and double BLARGH!!

Your TR will easily surpass the Crypt Car in
miles driven during year 2007.

There is an automatic fire extinguisher system
they sell for boats- below deck engine compartments.
Maybe I should look into installing one in Crypty?
It puts out engine gasoline fires instantly.

d

Or maybe just weld a trailer hitch to
Crypty's front frame, hook him up the
Gray Ghost and have a friend pull me
around the island with the engine off !!

That would certainly work.
