Crypt Update

cryptmails.gif

The Crypt Car broke down again this morning before
even out of the garage. Less than 16 hours functional.

Going back on jack stands, once again.

Depressing

Re: Crypt Update

Dale

What happened on this episode of tales from the crypt?

Re: Crypt Update

Step back for awhile. Let it rest. You have an excellent support group with the forum.

I remember when my TR went through middle age I dreamed of driving it off a cliff....but I couldn't get it started.

Years later the 4a is a cherished family member.

Re: Crypt Update

Fuel flooding again via carbs.

Re: Crypt Update

I thought he had some high doller rebuilt carbs? Id=s he having choke problems?

Re: Crypt Update

DNK- yup for a fact-

high $$ rebuilt carbs with $$ rebuilt intake manifold
and a high $$ dollar, custom built fuel delivery system
with twin in-line filters.

Major carb flooding problem in one.

Back to the drawing board.
Crypty wins another round. Back on blocks.

Now I'm into rebuilding stuff I already rebuilt once.
It's the ghost of DPO Pedro. 330 miles driven.

Re: Crypt Update

caveat - i'm an engineer so i tend not to get pi$$ed off unless it's MY car! only then do i act irrationally...

instead let's look at things logically.

so dale, what changed?

pump?

lines?

what else?

correct me if i'm wrong, but you are using a mechanical pump, and the lines are the stock size, right? you didn't sneak an electric pump in there 'just in case'.

as has been said, job 1 is to check your fuel pressure.

then check the x-section of the lines to the carbs. they are little lines for a reason unless i'm totally fuddled after the rochioli tasting tonight.

from all those fluid dynamics classes that i endured (usually hungover) way back when, istr flow rate = pressure x cross sectional area (or something similar).

if you made it bigger then you'll get more flow right up until the pump maxes out.

if that's all chicken soup (and if you are wondering what i mean, watch the movie 'lock stock and 2 smoking barrels') then check the carbs are still ok.

I gotta say, you really aren't having any breaks here. i feel for you. i really do. you put all my issues into perspective...

you are nearly there. you have a nearly new car. don't give up - you'll gift an almost perfect car to some lucky guy if you give in.

Re: Crypt Update

Amen, amen, amen, Brother!!!!

No giving up at this point.

Re: Crypt Update

What size where those braided lines??

Yeah, not to mention depriving us voyeurs of our twice weekly dose of "what broke" with Dale!!

Re: Crypt Update

A friend of mine had an overflow problem when he put on a new fuel pump (on a Spitfire). It seems that some of the new fuel pumps will put up a lot more pressure than the original ones. The result is that the pump can force the valves in the carbs open even though the floats are trying to hold them closed. His solution was to install a fuel pressure regulator between the pump and carbs. This restricted the pressure to a more reasonable level and solved his problem.

That's the good stuff, I'm envious!

Re: Crypt Update

hello Alana,

"if you made it bigger then you'll get more flow right up until the pump maxes out."

I'm afraid that I have to correct you here, that is just not true. The lines are capable of a greater flow rate but the carburettor, in this case, determines the flow so bigger lines will not be a factor.

Re: Crypt Update

The DPO primary lines I gutted were 5/16" and the new
lines I installed were 5/16" also.

The carb lines I removed were 1/4" and the new carb
lines I installed are also 1/4".

The new pump is standard issue TRF. I think.
Jeff Palya fabulous refurbished twin Strombergs.

This same carb belched gasoline once before... after it
had sat for two months beside a busy highway over at the
funeral home. Pump and lines then were all DPO Pedro
original.

Well, I gotta be upbeat. At least this weekly breakdown
took place at home and not 40 miles away in heavy traffic.

My bet is the water pump will be the next DPO Pedro part to
blow up and leave me stranded.

Re: Crypt Update

Well, look at it this way. My car is running well, bar the few usual leaks. I spent all day yesterday getting it looking great with the clay bar treatment and carnuba waxing, interior and engine detailing, etc. to get ready for today's show. Packed the car last night and got up early to get ready and make sandwiches and it's been pouring since 5:00 with rain in the forecast for the next three days.

So neither one of us is going anywhere for one reason or another.

It's not just you, it's the curse of owning these cars.

Re: Crypt Update

I feel your pain brother Paul-

Crypt Car dead for the foreseeable future.
Major marine small craft warning for the next
ten days-- so Tres Gatos is high and dry with no
fishing possible. Light work load this week and
finally getting over this miserable head/chest cold.

All my toys and none available to play with.

I suppose I could start gutting the front suspension.
Mighty dark in there. DPO Pedro sprayed everything
bull black.

d

Re: Crypt Update

Concentrate on the carbs and get rid of that fixation of tearing the front suspension apart.

It's a lot easier to get dirt out of the carb bowl and needle valve than it is to tear apart a front suspension.

Re: Crypt Update

says YOU!!!

So far this morning, I've been unable to even LOCATE
the dang needle valve, let alone remove it.

I could have had half those doodaddy things in the front
suspension removed and soaking in that 6 gallons of gasoline
I still got left over from Crypty's fuel tank battle with me.

Beautiful sunny day here to be driving an old car or
fishin' a new tarpon boat.

BTW: What do I do with the needle valve once I find it?
