Excellent work, I'm sure no one is laughing at the way you got after that broken fork pin.

Sorry to slightly hijack the thread, but opinions so far are that you need flywheel refacing. I looked at your picture, and it looked to be what I've typically seen. In the past, all I've ever checked on the flywheel was signs for excess heat discoloration, ridging, cracks, etc., after which I left it as is and just bolted in a new clutch plate with no further trouble. Is it just good practice to reface with the tranny out, or a must?

Yes it is good practice on 30 + year old cars. More often than not, unless there has been severe abuse a simple refacing will take care of any shudder and clutch chatter that you don't want after doing all of that work.

In the extreme cases, a good machine shop will either magnaflux or just see any cracking and advise you to replace the flywheel. A flywheel spinning at several thousand RPM's in not a pretty thing when it decides to disintegrate and come through the floor in pieces. It is rare, but it happens, so why take a chance?

Dale,
Do you have a clutch alignment tool? If not you should get one. They're not expensive. It aligns the clutch splines exactly so the splines on theinput shaft from the transmission match and everything goes together smoothly.

Bob, Thanks for the offer-

I am fairly sure I have the tool. In TRF
Magic clutch kit there is a plastic shaft
about 4 inched in length that appears to
have splines around the outside. It looks
similar to this piece inside my tranny
open section.

That's the correct tool to use. Just make sure that the clutch disc is facing in the proper direction.

Hey Paul !!

Thanks as always. I'm pretty sure I saw the clutch
disk stamped "this side toward flywheel".

The shaft in the photo has no bushings either end.
I have two new bushings for my new shaft.
Where do I put them?

Oil leaks from the splines, behind the throw out
bearing. I have the new oil seal but no gasket.
Can I make a gasket from thin cardboard?

I'm sitting here all day designing at the 'puter.
I'm itchin' to drive over and do some more clutch
work on Crypty. Looks like it will be Wednesday.

Look at the email that I sent you over the weekend. It has a picture of where the bushings go and a description of how to install them.

Then you can get to work on ole' Crypty.

A minor update:

This morning while I was trying to figure out
the T/O bearing fork and pedal shaft arrangement,
Caesar the mechanic stopped by the Crypt to take
a look at the flywheel.

Good new for me (relative I suppose, given what
a nightmare I have)

Caesar proclaimed the flywheel in decent condition
but recommends resurfacing as a good measure. So
Bill, thanks greatly for your offer of your flywheel
but it looks like I'm ok.

I am hoping to have the flywheel out this weekend
and then monday take it somewhere Caesar will tell
me for resurfacing. Is that like sanding it with
1000 grit powder ?
