Crypt Car News Update

This is not one bit funny and no one better
laugh or I'll getcha!

Three weeks ago the Beast from heck blew up and
stranded me in who knows where? a couple of youngsters
rolled the hateful Crypty into their back yard, blah,
blah, blah- he ended up back in my garage with a new SS
braided hydraulic hose between clutch master and slave.

Clutch still shot and needing replacement. Now everyone
knows by now ole Tinster in one fine architect but he
knows zip about auto mechanics. I'm so stupid when it
comes to auto mechanics, I don't even know when I am
just plain not capable of doing something. So like an
idiot I forge ahead and once in a while I succeed to
some degree. With a lot of input from forum experts!

The mechanic with the old MGA kinda backed out of
replacing the Crypt Car clutch - too busy. And Wendy
is really sick of seeing the dead car parked next to
her beautiful, limited edition, leather interior Jeep.

So I rented an empty garage space from a local funeral
home and put Crypty up on Jacks. (DO NOT LAUGH!!) Cheap
rent.

So of course a non-mechanic like myself has not a clue
how to change out something as truly difficult as
a TR6 clutch. But I have the TRF Magic clutch kit
and Wendy wants it sent back or installed.

So I tackled the clutch today- 8 hours worth. Something
called a freakin' fork pin was busted and it took 2 hours
with a torch to burn the fork and long bar out of the
tranny housing. Here's a few photos- any and all advice
or tips will be greatly appreciated.

Dale, after you took off the operating shaft and fork from the Crypt Car, I hope you crafted a fine heavy maul to smartly strike the "cabron" DPO with. But now that you have come this far you might as well keep on with it.
1) Check the flywheel surface for "blueing" or score marks, it might need resurfacing, etc.
2) Check or replace the rear crankseal, oil leaks are not good.
3) Check the FAQ's for the addition of a safety bolt along with the taper pin.
4) Check the bushing in the crankshaft for wear, don't forget to put some high temp grease in it.
5) lubricate the new operating shaft bushings and also the shaft that the throwout bearing slides on with lithium grease.
6) To quote Haynes " Installation is the reverse of removal"........

You tha man, Dale. I was just concerned about you hurting your back. I'm impressed.
Now, you got a new cross shaft, fork, pin, etc. Be sure to safety wire the pin in. Also, do you want my flywheel, I could get it refurbished over her with the new ring gear and ship. Take a while. Just pay for ring gear and whatever the shop charges me to reface and put gear on.

Anyway, make sure you use the strongest Locktite for things like your Magic Clutch components and your drive train flange (4 bolts, should use all-metal locking nuts, never Nyloc {although the factory occasionally used them here}).

And, you do have that little plastic clutch liner-upper tool to center your new clutch.

Ok, a photo for the flywheel guys.
Not that good a photo.

The flywheel to me has a mirror finish- it gleams.
I can detect no ridges, lines, impressions or other
irregularities. No outer teeth were missing or broken.

The black disk that pushes up against the flywheel
was also smooth on both sides and NOT worn down to
rivets. It appeared polished. I dropped it off for
Caesar to view and he said it was worn out but not
enough to have damaged the flywheel.

I told him of your offer Bill. Caesar said he will
take a look at the flywheel on Monday or Tuesday and
let me know whether to request your flywheel.

From what you can see and I viewwed , what do you think?

I forgot
The tranny was held in place with only three bolts
plus the two starter bolts. That was it.

I see that you are dirty, but I am not seeing any blood. Are you sure you did this project, I am suspecting you added the dirt for the photo. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Looks pretty burnished. Definitely needs to be refaced. Probably ok to use after getting it turned.

Dale, along with checking all the usual stuff, you better check the mounting surface of the bellhousing for cracks, because if that Cabron PO only put a couple of bolt to hold the engine and trans together some local overstress could have occurred. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Mark: Since I know very little about auto
mechanics I learned very quickly I was getting
bloody mostly from trying to loosen rusted or
tight bolts.

I began to use leverage to become a bloodless
mechanic. I use different lengths of pipes to
extend my wrenches and socket handles.

I scratched my elbow today and that's about it.

But I DID have to use oil and grease remover to
shampoo my hair tonight. The water ran black from
my head.

The photo was actually cleaned up. Wendy would
have my head if I had gotten oil and grease all
over my brand new Wrangler.

What I accomplished today is I got everything
out and taken apart. Next come the rebuild.

Dale,

Glad to see you got the Crypt Car back! I guess the kids finally got tired of pushing him around. Don't tell Crypty I said this but it appears you're winning! Dale, not everybody can pull a clutch or even want to. Great Job!!! As Bill said do not forget to get the clutch alignment tool.

Dale, you never cease to amaze me!

I'm truly impressed and I want to congratulate your efforts. But you must have that flywheel checked. Forget checked, it must be resurfaced. And use all of the new bolts and the two dowel pins that came withe the Magic Clutch kit.

If you are missing anything (except a flywheel), email me and I probably have spares to send you.

Also, make sure that you install the clutch disc with the proper side facing the flywheel.

Need a little advice:

Like I posted, only three thru bolts were
holding the tranny to the engine. I purchased
a combination of 5/16" and 3/8" bolts and nuts
as that seems to be the bolt open sizes.

I had a good bit of difficulty getting the tranny
out because of two threaded 1-1/4" length studs
at the very top. The steel dowel was no problem.

My question: Are there supposed to be these two
threaded studs in the back of the engine? Or should
I attempt to remove them and install bolts and
lock washers? The two tapped and threaded engine
holes have 5/16" threaded studs in them.

A photo of where the studs got thru the tranny.

There should actually be three studs from the engine block - the hole to the left of the ones you have marked (in the picture) shoudl also use a stud. Don't take these out (unless you plan to replace them with new studs) - I have absolutely no idea how you would get the gearbox back in without them! When you put the gearbox back in you basically hang it from these three studs.

Oh, and you won't want to hear this after spending two hours with a cutting torch, but you can get the shaft and fork out using a hacksaw in about 5 minutes. Maybe next time you do the job? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
