Crypt Car is Broken Again

So, you've found you need to upgrade the stud problem.
When you either helicoil or go to slightly larger diameter studs. Strong recommendation is that when you do, go to coarse thread studs where they mount into the aluminum. Use red locktite and that should do it!

Dale from the way it looks, those can be repaired with the Time-serts which were recommended. I have used similar inserts on my car to repair striped out aluminum (I used E-Z LOK inserts). According to the Time-sert data sheets they are very thin so clearance wont be a problem even though they have already been repaired once.
Find a good machine shop around you, they have accurate machines for milling and will be able to line up the holes properly. The inserts themselves shouldn't cost more than about $1 each, at least thats what the e-z lok inserts cost. They will be stronger than original when done.
I am guessing that those are 5/16th (0.3125")
The Ezlok "thin" inserts require a 7/16 hole (0.43")
The time serts need a "P" drill 0.323"
Measure how large the holes are now, and then you can decide which type will work best.
The e-z lok type are available from McMaster-Carr .

Hello Dale,

You keep telling us that you know next to nothing about being a mechanic. Ball Der Dash!!! You are well on your way to being a master on english cars. I have great admiration for a guy to stick out such a heavy duty pile of DPO leftovers, complete with the disadvantage of being well removed from the usual sources of supply. Hero? Doggone right. Stop selling yourself short. If crypty had ever had an owner that persevered as well as you , it would not need all this TLC now. I fix these cars for a living, and know how frustrating it can be. All the previous owners had 38 years to ruin the car, and YOU have reversed that in a mighty short time. WE are all proud!!

While there are many good valid suggestions on this thread on how to repair the TA, from watching your trials and tribulations with local resources IMO getting a good used TA from the States is the best way for you to go.

At some point in time, as AWEMAN stated, the only source for these items will be old ones, like yours, that will have been rehabilitated.

Well thanks one and all. I sure do appreciate all
the advice and kind words. Sometimes I get a little down
in the dumps with this Crypt project that never ends.

Yesterday scared the daylights out of me; almost
losing a wheel at 40 mph-in a curve I usually take
at 60 mph.

They say a smart man knows when he's over his head and
when to ask for help. It's been said by some that I am
not a stupid person. Others that I'm a fool.

For sure I am in over my head on this one.

The local island talent installed those helicores that
failed on me with my wife in the car. Nuff said?

I've got the Armstrong shock unhooked and the T/A lowered
with the coil spring out of compression. Next I'll pull the
T/A out and box it up for Paul.

When Paul's T/A arrives I'll install new bushings, bolts,
nuts, rubber pieces, etc. I'll pay a mechanic to make a
house call and reinstall the rear wheel brake pieces I
removed. I'll keep throwing out photo for the new TR owners
to learn from my attempts.

Oh Paul, if that not asking too much....
could you maybe have the T/A powder coated a pleasing
orange to go with my yellow coil springs? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

Getting there but done for today-

Dale,

Please don't send me that TA. I don't want it nor will I ever repair anything like that for my car.

I'll send you the right side TA that I got from ebay after I check it out a bit more tomorrow. There are two studs missing, that may have just come out when they took the nuts off. I want to run a tap in those as well as running dies over the existing studs to make sure they are OK before I send it to you. I also want to check it for cracks.

If this works out, you can pay me what I paid for this one and the shipping to you.

Sorry I didn't get this done today, but I had family obligations after golf and needed to get them done.

Major nor'easter headed our way tomorrow and into Monday. Copious amounts of rain and possible snow are due by Monday, AM.

I'll be in touch tomorrow about the TA.

Help on the way tomorrow via some form of shipment to Tinster.

Luckily the spare T/A's that I bought on eBay a while back are OK.

The right side needs studs, which I took out to check the threads. I re-tapped the threads, actually just chased them with a tap and now it will go to it's new home in sunny Puerto Rico. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Thanks so much Paul!
Your kindness overwhelms me.

I have been taking tons of photos and I will author
a technical paper with mega "how to" photos on:

1. How to replace trailing arm bushings.
2. How to install new coil springs.
3. How to service your Armstrong lever shocks.

Hopefully my latest Crypty ordeal will help someone else.

Aside from my usual travails of what to do next to my TR6, it has become my goal to help you acheive your first actual month of "break down free driving" in the Crypt car.

We're up to over a week, so a month is not out of the question at this point in time.

err... ah...ahem....

One day and four hours short of a week I'm afraid.

But heck! That's a record unto itself!!
Four complete days with no breakdown.

And it was grand fun while it lasted.

The next run will be for a month or longer. I do think we should start to plan a time when we can all get together in PR. Paul needs to see were all these parts went,Ben needs a holiday and a ride in a TR6, Shawn can be the official photog., And I'll just chum along for the ride. Now all we have to do is set up a time. All in favor say "I"
Dave (or should I say "I")

"I!.. I,I,I,I,I"
Actually I got a ride in a TR6 friday night. We went over and got my brothers outta mothballs and I got to give it a whirl for about 5 miles. I needed that.
Funny you should mention a PR trip. Our 10th anniversery is this year, and wifey was wondering if we could afford a trip somewhere nice. I've never been off the contenant, and we've never gone any further than North Carolina togeather.
It's all a $$$$ game now. but PR would be a fun trip. Especially if it were with a few more "team" members.
I'm still impressed with Dales confidence in this project.
Kudos man!!!

Let me know the dates and I'll see if we can join in also. It wouldn't make my wife mad to do this, I just need to get away cleanly from some very important projects that I'm working on.

No.....it has nothing to do with the yellow TR6 in the garage either!!

Want to run that by us again Shawn? A little quick with the submit button were we?

David & Team Crypty /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

I spoke with Charlie and he said he'd give everyone a
"steep" discount at his Campomar Inn and a corporate
discount at his comfort Inn.

Wendy and I could maybe make some time to visit with
you Team Crypty guys and your wives.

Paul: Moss T/A parts order in place for special
air delivery by Friday. I'm hoping someone will volunteer
to arrive here Friday after work to install all these
parts I have now removed from Crypty. I figure with my
limited automotive skills, it might take me a month or
two to git Crypty back on the street. Heck, maybe longer
even! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nopity.gif

I hear ya Dale, but it can't happen this week for me. Even with free airfare. I'm all for coming down at some point but it will need some pre-planning. At least a few weeks out or so.
