Crossland oil filter

Hi all,
I need to change the oil on my '75 B. This will be my first time trying it. The filter is a spin-on type, but it is labelled as a CROSSLAND 529/1. I'm not familiar with this brand. Is there an equivalent in a more easy-to-find brand? If <font color="blue"> </font> not, who sells Crosslands?

Just about to do the same. I believe I got a Crosland oil filter from Moss or Victoria British. Purolator PL-14670 may work as well. I think Fram PH 43 will work. Not wanting to start the great oil filter debate up again, so your best bet will be to go to the local auto parts store and see if your favorite brand of oil filter has one that will work with you '75 B. Just make sure it has the anti drain back valve.

I use Purolator (Fram has such a bad reputation right now I haven't looked twice at them). If you're not sure about the number (14670 sounds right to me, I'd have to check my logbook though) just look for a cross-reference book at the autoparts store or ask the people there. Most all of the stores I've been to around here list MGBs for all their filter brands.
 
I've used alot of different filters. IMO, the best filter on the market is made by Wix. The part number for an MGB is 51068. Compare one of these to a Fram and you'll never use Fram again. Filter includes a drain-back valve so if you have a topload adapter, it helps prevent dry starts. It fits the Ford 302/5.0l engine and a bunch of older Chryslers, so it should be available at a real auto parts store (not the chains).

The Mini and the MGB can use some of the same filters. If you think it's hard finding parts for a "B" try asking the guys in the parts stores for something for a Mini.

I compiled this partial list of similar/compatible oil filters from several threads on other message boards. I hope they are of some use to you. Some of these filters were not intended for British cars and are "longer" than the Unipart/Rover stuff. I assume they would still fit a "B". (I have a bigger list printed out somewhere... this is all I have at work).

I think the Fram filter is the PH43 for top mounts. The PH3614 fits my John Deere lawn mower and it is a LOT smaller than the Purolator filter I have for our MGB. I replaced the Fram PH3614 with a Purolator yesterday on our mower. However, IF the PH3614 DID fit my MGB it is too small for me to use.

The PH966B I believe is correct for the bottom mount MGB's. Wish my 78 was a bottom mount. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
Can anyone comment on personal experience with the K&N oil filters? I think well of Wix filters and that page seemed to agree. However, I have admiration for K&N air filters and wondered if their oil filters were of similar quality? It said that K&N's were to be added to the list.
 
Wish I had "personal experience" but...I wanted to use K&N last year and read a lot of non-positive things (nothing really bad I guess, just nothing good compared to the other products out there). I really like the filter cans themselves, the ones I've seen are exactly like the Champion filters for airplane engines with safety wire tabs and a "nut" welded on the end so you can use a regular socket to loosen the filter.

Supposedly, by the way, K&N oil filters are made by "Champion Labs" as are Delco filters.
 
I wonder how much difference the filter brand really makes. Especially on low mileage cars that get the oil changed frequently. I like the K&N because the nut on the end makes it very easy to loosen it with a one inch wrench. The K&N #HP-2009 fits my spin on adapter well & the anti drainback always works. I can even pour it full of oil & then install it horizontally without spilling any oil.

My only comment about the K&N filters is they seem to be rather expensive. I haven't heard any bad press about them.
 
I've always heard what Scott expressed above, that K&N's were just tarted up Delco filters. I've bben using Purolator filters for some time and haven't had any problems.
