How about a thread that discusses cars that shared the same make and name, but were different automobiles? Or were the same cars, but had different names.

Ex:

Ford Escort (Sporty British Sedan/Dumpy US Econobox)
UK Ford Sierra/US Merkur

US Cavalier / UK Cavalier
US Chevette / UK Chevette
US Falcon / Oz Falcon
US Dodge Dart / UK Daimler Dart
Italian Ferrari GTO / US Pontiac GTO
UK Austin 7 TT / German Audi TT

On the other hand, my '78 MG Midget is a bit too new for vintage racing, but when I put the "Austin Healey Sprite" badges on it, it's 100% legal! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Ferrari Monza/Corvair Monza
Cunningham C5R/Corvette C5R
Austin Se7en/Morris Mini Minor
Austin Se7en/Lotus Seven

Don't forget the GM triplets (I think there were only 3 of them)

Pontiac LeMans/Vauxhall Astra/Opel Kadett

Surely you're not referring to the hideous late 80's GM LeMans? Was Europe also saddled with that freak. At least it makes the Aztek look good.

Apologies all around for any LeMans fans out there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

If that is the 80s one then you can add another one to the list - Daewoo (can't remember the model name).

No, there was no such beast as the LeMans in Europe, thankfully. Very few American cars made it to the UK, those that did usually being owned by US service personnel.

aeronca65t - there's a number of other TTs as well as Austin 7 and Audi,
Frazer-Nash
Humber
Riley
etc.
They were named after the Tourist Trophy and the sporting suggestion was too strong for manufacturers to overlook.

Lots of 7s (or Se7ens) too, Xracer - but that was a popular horsepower rating so a bit too generic - like all the pre-WWii 8s, 10s, 12s etc. Every manufacturer had them.

Let's leave out numbers - how about Talbot Solara & Toyota Solara - an odd name used twice, and recently too?

Isuzu Trooper / Acura SLX / Honda Horizon / Holden Jackaroo / Opel & Vauxhall Monterey

I love my Trooper, and the fact that three companies had rebadged the same vehicle was one of the reasons I bought it. The way I figure it, if Honda (& Acura) and GM (Holden/Opel and Vauxhall) are both willing to put thier names on the Isuzu, it is worth owning.

Just to clarify, the LeMans was not sold under that name, but it was essentially the same car as the Astra/Kadett. I actually like the Euro versions, and luckily the quality on those was much better than the Daewoo-made Pontiac version

I was thinking of an earlier LeMans....doh! Quite correct, I remember the Vauxhall Astra, and it really wasn't a bad little car. Rather like the Escorts, whereby the European versions were really rather good, and the US-market cars were pretty dire. My son has a 1996 Escort, and it isn't a bad little car, but I remember the UK Escorts as being rather better, and certainly more solidly put together.

Different cars that share a name (apologies for the non-British content):

VW Bora/Maserati Bora
Pontiac Le Mans/Singer Le Mans
Chev Nova/Vauxhall Nova
Bentley Continental/Lincoln Continental
Dodge Avenger/Hillman Avenger
Austin Metro/Geo Metro
Alpine Renault/Sunbeam Alpine/Talbot Alpine
Plymouth Caravelle/Renault Caravelle/VW Caravelle
Hudson Commodore/Opel Commodore/Holden Commodore
Dodge Lancer/Mitsubishi Lancer
Daimler Century/Buick Century/Toyota Century
Austin Ambassador/AMC Ambassador
Studebaker Hawk/Humber Hawk
Lagonda Rapier/Sunbeam Rapier
Chev Monte Carlo/Lancia Monte Carlo
Chev Monza/Opel Monza
Chrysler Imperial/Humber Imperial
Riley Monaco/Dodge Monaco
Riley Sprite/Austin-Healey Sprite
Singer Vogue/Range Rover Vogue
Riley Imp/Hillman Imp
Lotus Excel/Hyundai Excel
Opel-Vauxhall Corsa/Toyota Corsa
Daimler Conquest/Chrysler Conquest
Ford Zephyr/Lincoln Zephyr
Triumph Vitesse/Rover Vitesse
Singer Gazelle/Nissan Gazelle
Hudson Hornet/Wolseley Hornet
Jowett Javelin/AMC Javelin
Reliant (Scimitar, Rebel, Robin, etc)/Plymouth Reliant
Armstrong-Siddeley Sapphire/Ford Sierra Sapphire

I thought up this list over a number of days for a thread on a different forum earlier in the year. Just in case anybody thought I've got some sort of amazing super memory. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As for same car, different names, I started thinking about it but there are so many my brain is melting.

How about the Ford Granadas.......both in the UK and the US. Once again, totally different vehicles, with the UK/European market having the more dynamic and modern products.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'd forgotten about the Granada's. I really liked the old Euro Granadas, but the replacement (Scorpio) from the early 90's on did nothing for me. Of course thinking about the Granada, reminds me of a couple more....

Ford Escape/Ford Maverick and for that matter....
Ford Maverick/Ford Maverick (old 70s US Car vs. current SUV)
Nissan Stanza/Nissan Bluebird (Late 80s)

Wow... now that we started this, there are a ton that I had forgotten about /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Careful, they did the same for the Isuzu Rodeo (Honda Passport) which while it was quite handy in the dirt, it was never up to Honda's quality reputation.

I have to agree. My sister-in-law bought a Passport to replace her Civic and the Passport is definately the more troublesome of the 2. As a matter of fact, she passed the Civic on to her son and his '93 sees the shop less than her '99.
