Crosley with BMC engine-trying to identify it.

I recently acquired a 1951 Crosley Super Sport that was fitted with a BMC OHV engine and transmission around 1959 by a college student with more time and talent than cash. He was obviously trying to create some sort of Heally looking buggy on a budget. The motor has a tag on it that reads TG3N6044. It looks like an "A" series motor somewhat like the one in my Nash Metropolitan. I have checked several sites trying to research the motor with no success. It appears the "TG" may stand for a "Gold Seal" engine. Some old notes in the car seem to indicate it may be an Austin A30/40 powerplant. Can anybody shed some light? Thanks in advance. Nick in VA.

I doesn't appear to be a BMC A series engine, well at least not from the numbers. Austin 30/40 series engines had a very different numbering convention. Gold seal/Silver seal engines don't seem to fit in the scheme either. Follow this link for a list: https://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccz/technic/codeseng.pdf

BTW, welcome to the forum. I'm sure there are a number of people out here with more information in this area than I have, and that someone will come up with an answer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I love the Crosley HotShot/SuperSports! Nothing like a car that can win the Index of Performance at Sebring with a motor that puts out 26.5 gross hp stock.

I though about the Nash Metropolitan but the A series cars have engin numbers that start with 1G-####### /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

Re: Crosley with BMC engine-trying to identify it

A series engines have their capacity cast into the left side of the engine block: e.g. 800 for 803 cc, 950 for 948 cc. These are the two most likley donor possibilities, if the engine was installed in 1959 or earlier. After 1959, the A series grew into 997, 998 1100 and 1275 cc progressivley.

Is there any chance that BMH could identify the engine type from that serial number? I've been told that they can answer a lot of questions on the phone for "free" (if you call an overseas telephone call free). Supposedly they only have to charge for their assistance when they mail you things like the certificates.

Nick,

Did you ever find anything more on this engine? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
