Yesterday, as I was sitting in the big easy watching the news, I started to hear a thumping sound that sounding like it was coming from behind the wall just behind my head. That's about where our furnace sits in the garage. So, I went out to the garage and sure enough, I was hearing some critter in the ductwork that extends off the top of the furnace. About 2 feet up from the top of the furnace there are two "flappers" in the duct that you use to close off the air flow to/from the furnace during the summer when the swamp cooler is in use. It sounded like the critter (guessing a mouse) was running around just above those flappers and was panicked trying to get free. (Somehow it must have gotten into the ductwork up above and managed to fall down into the main furnace duct. The distance to the top of the duct is about 6-7 feet, so any critter falling down into that much would not be able to climb back up.
Well, eventually the noise stopped and I assumed the little guy must have just expired from fright and imagined that he must be expired on top of those flappers. So, I had to take the duct apart to see if there was a dead mouse up in there. There is a section of the duct just above the furnace that is designed to be removed (not easily) to access the flappers, etc. I spent about an hour last night taking the duct apart and - no mouse! The best I can figure is, he must have managed to get past the flappers and fell down into the furnace and found his way out at the bottom of the furnace where the filter sits.
