Criteria for replacing Flywheel Ring Gear

Does anyone have any usefull criteria on when you should replace the starter ring gear on the flywheel. I have mine all disassembled and now that I look at it it does have some wear.. but there is no guidance in the Bentley manual on what wear is acceptable. The wear is the same 360 degrees around so the suggestion to rotate 90 degrees does not seem of any use for me. My thinking is that it is apart so might as well replace it. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? This is a TR4 with the bolt on ring gear. Thanks

TR4 uses a Bendix-type starter. I would look at the leading edge of the ring gear teeth. Some rounding is OK, but they need to still come to a point or you'll have trouble with the starter not engaging.

You might consider one of the "high tech" gear-drive starters instead. They are a pre-engaged design, so the shape of the teeth is much less important. Costs more than a new ring gear, but also eliminates other problem areas.
