Crips!

Okay, my two cents.

I was on the sorry end back in elementary school.

Being(at that time fatherless) and moving into a new neighborhood, kids really do need acceptance. I had an ogre of a teacher who used the yardstick.

But that wasn't enough she verbally chided, embarassed and did her best to get me to make me feel as insignifigant as possible, constantly reminding the class of my error, throughout the entire semester.

Power corrupts and in the hands of a supervisor/instructor can cause irreparable damage to people.

Sorry for your bad experience. I, on the other hand, had my share of whacks on the rear with a "special board" the nuns used. But in my case, I almost certainly deserved what I got and don't feel the experience did any harm to me at all. It sounds like your teacher abused her power, but the other extreme (no consequences for abhorent behavior) is far worse on the whole in my humble opinion.

I think we have a case of extremes here. Too much discipline and you can crush a person. Too little and you end up with, well, this debacle. I had my tail torn up by my dad, but he did it because he loved me and wanted me to do better. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I agree, but abuse is not discipline. When my mother would whack me across the legs with a switch, it was because I did something that I knew I shoudl not have done and well deserved what I got. Had she hit me out of anger or frustration for no good reason, that would have been abuse - she never did.
