Over a year ago my live-in travel agent booked a trip, now just 2 days away, which ends with a weekend in London. (Un)fortunately, HRH's royal promotion is now scheduled for that same weekend in that same metropolis.

We have already seen the effect on prices of lodging and return flights, as well as the (lack of) availability of transport to Heathrow on Sunday. Still, we're excited to be in the country during this momentous occasion. I'm planning to spend a silly amount of money on coronation souvenirs, and my wife has found the commemorative coin she intends to buy.

This will be the first (British) coronation in my or my British cars' lifetimes -- and I will actually be "there" -- so I finally have an excuse to place a coronation badge on each! I'm just hoping someone is actually making them this time around.

Do any of our UK friends know how tourism in other royal locations may be affected? My wife is especially keen to visit Hampton Court and Windsor Palace, but if either will be closed to the public then we'll have to find another way to pass the time.

You can take the tube from Heathrow quite easily (and cheaply)

Thanks everyone for info and suggestions. According to the websites, both Hampton and Windsor are open on Thursday and of course closed on Coronation Day.

We inquired with a car service (the one we hired for our transfers) about lugging us there and back, but for the price we are willing to take our chances with public transport. It's been a generation and a half since I was last in London but as I recall the tube was extremely easy, even for a directionally-challenged wanderer like me. And on Thursday we have no schedule nor baggage, so if we end up walking all the way back to the hotel, so be it!

I think that is how the best adventures start! Other than constantly double checking to make sure we were going to the correct platform it is such a great transit system!
