Crazy Coil

I'm checking spark in the distributor when the points open and close. I'm getting spark alright, but I'm also getting a big fat blue spark leaping from the negative terminal on the coil to the coil tower. I've got the distributor cap, wires, and the coil wire completely removed. With the coil wire off, should it jump to the tower, or have I stumbled upon another problem? Right before all the starter relay issues she was running really rough. She wouldn't rev and kept popping and backfiring.

Hi Jhorton3, This sounds like you have a defective tower on the coil or it is dirt tracked giving the spark a path to ground. Also make certain that the polarity connections to the coil are correct. I suggest changing the coil.--Fwiw---Keoke

Just to see what would happen I put the coil wire back on and got a nice fat spark at the end of it. I didn't see any spark jump from the terminal to the tower.
