Can you believe that my original tach cable crapped out on me after 34 years???? :devilgrin:

It's a shame that British Leyland is no more or I'd be firing a letter off to management.

I agree!I have a break in one of the TR6's
brake lines (34 years old).
What are the odds of 2 different parts failing
after 34 years?

I'd guess almost infinite....if you consider the many thousands of TR6s were produced, times the thousands of parts in a TR6....and that these are the only 2 that failed at 34 years...
Why, it's almost incalculable!

Not Triumph, but I once had a similar beef. Here I was, about to turn over a quarter-million miles (250,000) on my Volkswagen Type II pickup, when the dang speedometer cable broke! The odometer quit working! What kind of car is that?!?! I had to fix it (not that hard) to maintain my honor.
 
The trick is obviously to buy a 35 year old car, which will have already had these disposable parts replaced. Then you can look forward to many years' trouble-free motoring!

My Tr6 is now 39 years old and everything has failed or
broken apart and been replaced by me- except for the long
block and tranny. Maybe soon I'll have a trouble-free car?

You know, my TR250 and I are the same age (to be overly technical, I'm a few months older), and I sometimes think we're in a race to see whose parts are going bad faster! :jester:

I think the rate of decay of Triumph parts is related to the ambient temperature. Parts obviously last 5 or so years more in Puerto Rico. In Scotland we are lucky to get 10 years out of any car component.

What incredibly shoddy workmanship - couldn't even make it to the half-century mark. Inexcusable :smile:
 
I think Don Elliott had a Lucas coil go bad, I just don't understand why these parts fail so soon. If I remember correctly the date on Don coil was 1958 barely 50 years, how disgusting.
 
My dad had a 1958 Chevy pickup he bought new. Other than changing oil and regular maintenance, nothing was ever replaced on the truck. At 235 thousand miles and a few years later, it had a miss in it when he started it one cold morning. Found out it was a spark plug wire. He said he was going to package them off to GM and tell them their wires were no good and they should change their manufacture. We all got a big laugh out of that. Problem is, I think they did! Now they only last half that long.

A pal of mine has a Suburban. Not the "new" SoccerMom kiddie transporter, rather the TOOL version. He's outfitted it with winch, inverter, TWO batteries. It has membership in the "Quarter Million Mile" club (actually has double that, original engine, too). The Beast was purchased new in Alaska many years ago, has been from sea to sea numerous times, trekked the AlCan, been on the Keenai, Texas, Florida, well heeled indeed. He contacted Chevy about it hoping to get a new paint-job (silly, but what-th-heck). Turns out they're doing some commercials and he was contacted by the agency doin' the filming. He may get some SAG money for bein' on a commercial!

Quite funny, actually.
