I started out with a new speedo cable I bought off Ebay for the datsun tran an managed to conver it for the smiths speedo by changing out and recrimping the end from the original cable. I tested it and I now have a working speedo but I have no idea how accurate it is. The bad part is that I bought a grill surround off ebay and it came to me fast and I gave good feedback only to discover that I have a top and a bottom and two passenger side ends and no drivers side /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif Then I tried to fit the passenger side end and it was not fitting well because a tiny point on the fender inside was hitting. I tapped it with a hammer and it put a crack in the paint between the grill and the headlight /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif Wheew! I have about decided to put some black rubber or something between the paint and the grill surround.

And after you have fixed that just use (borrow) a GPS and verify speed.

On the freeways here they have speedo check sections.
5 Miles - so if you are going 60 mph it should take exactly 60 seconds to cover one mile. Do they do that everywhere?

BTW - sorry to hear about your surround. Considering what you got I hope you didn't spend too much. Did you contact the seller? Maybe he had more than one set and would replace the bad part?

We have the white lines across the roads here to, but they were not for the convenience of the motorist /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

In the old days, VASCAR (Visual Average Speed Computer And Recorder) airborn units of the Georgia State Patrol used a stopwatch to calculate a car's speed between two of these lines...if it's still being done I'm sure it's been computerized.

A number of years ago, on a stretch of I-75 just south of downtown Atlanta, I was pulled over early one morning (rush hour in Atlanta is from midnight until...the next midnight /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif along with 12-15 other cars. I had heard on a news program a few weeks earlier that if you were clocked by radar you should challenge the calibration method/frequency and you would likely win. First question I asked the trooper was "By what method did you calibrate your radar unit?" He smiled and said "None...bear in the air...VASCAR...by the way, you were doing 87...but I did enjoy that news report you saw."

OUCH!

I did a lot of reading today. Went out and bought an aluminum polishing kit. Found out the grill surround is annodized, found out how to remove the annodize. I think I can make that wrong piece work. I will just have to drill new holes to mount it.
