I saw a book last night at BooksaMillion titled CRAP CARS. MG's made it to infamy but not the TR6; however, the TR7 made the cast as well. The book puts them right up there with Pacers and Yugos.
 
Didn't we just have a whole, long thread on that "crap book".

funny thing is... I was watching the TopGear bit lastnight where they were going over the user reviews, and 10 of the 13 worst cars to own 10 were French.
 
Its funny I look through "worst car" books and I generally think "I want one" to a good amount of them. Of course I love Corvairs, SD1s, TR7s and even think the Vega was pretty nice (well the styling was anyway).
 
I like Corvairs, Vegas, Yugos, SD1's, TR-wedges, and several other "crap" cars. But, in a few cases... they were labeled that way for a reason. But some of those in books were just opinions, and maybe based more on styling cues rather that if they were actually a good car to begin with. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I read Crap Cars, and it showed absolutely no insight into really which cars were bad, and which ones had image problems.

I seem to remember that the Edsel was in the book. With the exception of the grill, which became more controversial after the fact, the car was top notch. It was extremely powerful, luxurious and reliable.

I remember thinking that book was written by a guy who knew little about automotive history.

But the Renault Dauphine deserves to be on that list!

And somehow the only Mustang built on its own lightweight, short wheelbase platform instead of an economy sedan is a piece of crap? This book is mediocre all around - after reading it, I attempted to use it for something else and my bum was chafed for a solid week!

If it's the book by Richard Porter, then it was. He can be pretty funny (he did or does the "Sniff Petrol" website, and has a column in EVO. But his automotive knowledge doesn't seem to extend to anything much earlier than the mid eighties, with the exceptions of some more notable cars of earlier decades (Ferraris, etc.)

Porter did a road test of a Bugeye Sprite a couple of years ago, and was flabbergasted. He couldn't imagine that a car as basic as that (but lacking the all important "Caterham" badge) could be enjoyable.

Mostly, when he mentions cars older than the Ford RS200 rally car, he uses the typical cliches. How he got a book deal is beyond me.

I too look at those books and think there is entertainment value in those cars. I think I was misled growing up... I want a Renault 4CV, the Citroen looked great fun, we almost had a Peogeot 403, and I'll admit to owning two Simcas in the early 70s. T.T.
