I have just installed a new fast road cam.
And now I am going to tigheten the crankshaft nut/starter dog. Is it ok to put a piece of wood between the engine block (oilsump removed) and the crankshaft and tighten the starter dog with a large monkey wrench, or is is any other way to prevent the crankshaft from moving when tightening the crankshaft nut ? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif

To avoid any risk of twisting the crankshaft, put your block of wood between the block and the counter-weight closest to the front of the engine.

I don't know if this is an "accepted" practice, but I've done it lterally a hundred times (maybe something like 125 times) and have never been bit in the a$$ by it.

With the new HP style crank dampeners, you'll need a pretty fancy "monkey-wrench" to reach inside the recess.

The big monkey wrench is sendt on holiday. I have borrowed a 1 11/16 pipe to do the job proper. Equiped with this, a piece of wood and long arm on the pipe, will do the job.
Another guy in the garage where my Healey is, is working on a beetle, he had a device that he put on the flywheel (starter tooths) to lock the crankshaft. I looks like it is made from a piece a flywheel which is mounted on the back plate and locks the flywheel.
Well, I am on tighten the crankshaft nut.
