TR2/3/3A crankshaft shims to align timing sprovkets

having finally got the woodruff keys ou, replaced crankshaft fixed end-float, etc. I added what seemed to be the right thickness of shims (.014 ) to align the two sprockets. I was disappointed to find the, with the shaft pushed forward against the front washer that there was still. 006 to go. With .004 end float just hoe closely
do the sprockets have to align?
 
The cam also has some end float, so IMO you need to check the sprocket alignment with both of them pushed either all the way forward or all the way back.

Since the shims come in .002" steps, I assume .002" is the alignment tolerance. If they could have just used .004" shims, then why bother making the .006" ones? But that's just a WAG.
 
thank you. Not sure what a WAG is ( Wild A Guess?) I managed to lose some sleep over this and came to a similar conclusion. There obviously is some allowance for play and I shall try to set the sprockets in the middle of this.

There's also SWAG (Sophisticated WAG), but it's pretty much the same thing :smile:
 
The crank will tend to move forward when the clutch is engaged and float at other times. The cam, however, should ride fully rearward, since the lobes are ground with a slight taper to cause that to happen. So, I set the clearance with the cam rearward, and then average the crank float. But that's just me.
