Crankshaft end bolt

I just finished changing my head gasket and am trying to get at the front engine oil seal... To do so, I have to remove the crank end bolt. The engine turns over quite easily when I tug at it. I was wondering what any of you do to stop the engine turning over... Put it in gear with handbrake?
Appeal to experience....

Here's what I did.... you can also use an impact wrench.

I sort of took the opposite approach -- fit the socket wrench on the bolt with a breaker bar braced against the frame... then bumped the starter (ignition off or hi tension at coil undone). One bump did it, no great drama in my case. Just be double-darn sure you have it braced in the direction the engine will want to move it.

Employ caution, use only as directed, etc etc.

If you choose not to use the strap method or the starter motor method, there is yet another option.

Pull the spark plug for #1 and turn the engine over slowly to bring the piston up to TDC on its compression stroke. Back the crank up about 30 degrees and feed clean rope in through the spark plug hole. Be sure to leave rope hanging out of the hole. Then loosen the crank bolt. The rope will prevent the piston from being able to go over the top.
