Crankshaft Damper

[ QUOTE ]
I had to unbolt the engine mounts to move the engine back eonugh to get the damper out from between the nose of the crankshaft and the reinforcing bar.

Roger,

If you loosen the mounts and raise the engine slightly you can get it back on. Make sure you torque the nut down firmly. The factory tool is a striking wrench which you hit with a hammer to get the nut on/off although a long breaker bar/torque wrench would work too. Putting the car in 4th gear will keep the motor from turning. Also make sure the lock tab is in good shape and peen over two sides firmly to capture the nut .. you don't want it to vibrate off! Mine came off during the first month of owning the car but luckily it just made some noise and didn't trash the fan/radiator/etc.

Cheers,
John

Thanks for the installation pointers. When the damper came apart, it dinged the front brake line so that has to be redone as well. Nevertheless, after hearing the really bad things that happened to others when their damper let loose, I feel very lucky.

Does anyone have any updates from using these recommended vendors?

I looked at damperdocs website, and was pretty disappointed to find the following: https://www.damperdoctor.com/Merchant2/me...tegory_Code=AUS

Damperdudes didn't have any Healey dampeners listed.

I have an E-mail into Dale's (who correectly identifies several Healey types__whew!).

I'm building a BN4, and much like John's comment, going for a completely accurate rebuild disqualifies the ProRace dampener.

What is an Austin Martin? A bad abortion between an Aston Martin and an Austin Healey...
