Crankshaft bushing removal?

Well I've tried the grease and the bolt method to get the pilot bushing out of my crankshaft, but nothing moved. I'm soaking it overnight in liquid wrench to see if that works.

Does anyone make a puller small enough to get in to that space to pull the bushing out? I've seen them advertised from 3/4 inch minimum and that space is smaller than that.

Any other ideas? I'm removing it as part of Rivergate Datsun conversion.

Bruce, instead of grease, use bits of soaking wet paper towels. I've yet to fail to remove one using this method. It's a lot cleaner than the grease, too.

The crankshaft in the motor is a replacement one I had to get because the one in the engine I rebuilt was fried. Is there a chance there's no pilot bushing in the crankshaft.

As part of the Rivergate kit they include 2 bushings. The smaller one seems that it can fit into the end of the crankshaft.

For those of you who have done it any ideas? Or how to check if the pilot bushing exists? Guess I could call Rivergate tomorrow....
 
Bruce, if it's a replacement crank, there is a very good possibility that there isn't a pilot bushing installed. Measure the ID of the hole and see if it's close to the input shaft on the original gearbox. The ID of the bushing should be .500", according to the measurement I just took.
The OD is about .750".

Can always peep in the end of the crank with a flash light, bushing is brass and you can see it. Could get your eyeballs calabrated to check the size, hehe.
 
Thanks for the information everyone. I did try to cut the bushing with a mini hacksaw last night, and when I peeked in to see what effect I was having, I noticed there is no Brass insert in there, as well as having no brass flakes...only a minimum of some steel filings. I'll check the ID, but I starting to suspect there ain't no bushing.

Guess that's why it won't come out..DUH...I also looked into the rear crankshaft of an engine I have on the floor. The Brass shines right into your face.....more later. Right now I've got a cold that requires me to pass out on the couch and assorted times.
 
Bruce, stick the butt end of a 1/2" drill bit in there. If it flops around rather than barely wiggles, there is no bushing in it.

Finally got around to checking it NO BUSHING! Put the one it needed for the Datsun trans., and the project continues.

And I didn't even take advantage of it...tried to remove it anyway.
