I have a cannister lookin' thing on the front of my timing cover... I have seen pictures that look like this hooks up to a "Y" and into the carbs... is this correct? <dumb question>What does this do?</dumb question>

Also, my valve cover has another vent lookin' port on it that has been plugged. Should this be hooked up to something? I have no smog equip on this car.

Actually that thing on the cam cover is supose to suck fumes into the carbs and burn em.

The vent on the valve cover, a wrong part, belongs on an early model also goes to the carbs on them, they do not have the cam cover vent.

You do need a vent of some sort to releave the pressure when the engine is running, both not required. Even the old Bugeyes had the valve cover vent to the carbs.
 
Jack, I think his vent is the graduated orifice type and it originally went to the charcoal canister (as did the timing chain vent) then the carbs pulled vacuum on that charcoal canister. ...or something like that. I'm thinking he should run it to the air filter can to allow clean air to be drawn in (unless his oil cap is vented-then he could plug it). I think I have confused myself.
 
The timing cover shoud vent into your carbs or air filter. The valve cover vent should go to the charcoal canister, or if that is missing, draw through a small air filter. Clean air comes in the top of the engine through the valve cover, and crankcase air vents out through the timing cover.
 
He is right about the "y-pipe" hooking to the carbs from the timing chain cover vent. This gives a good neg pressure on the crank case. It does make your engine run a little dirty (pulling oil fumes), but it is an acceptable solution if the charcoal cannister is missing.
 
Hmm, makes sence to me, I did not realise that valve cover vent was an intake, guess it is behind the air cleaners for that reason. Of course the BE engine just vents to the ground from the tappet chest.
