Crankcase Gasket Question

I'm a little puzzled.

I'm rebuilding my BJ7 Engine and came up with two extra gaskets that are part of the oil sump set. In addition to a 2-part gasket that goes between the sump pan and the block, there are two cork gaskets that are about 4" long and perhaps 3/16" square.

Are these perhaps something from an earlier model, or have I missed something?

Help!

No, they are not extra. They get stacked under the front & rear main bearing caps. Sometimes the caps sit a little below flush with the pan rail & the gasket itself is not enough to prevent a leak.

Thanks Dave!

Both my front and rear bearing caps are flush with the flanges of the block and I would be concerned that the extra thickness of gasket in that area would create a gap at the transition. Would these two extra pieces be considered as "optional" or "as needed"?

Hi Lance,
I don't really know. My caps "looked" flush so I left the corks out. My gasket leaks. DWR said to put the corks in to stop the leak. I think the gasket itself & the corks are soft enough to conform to the additional thickness as needed. It may be that your pan flange is distorted enough to benefit from the corks.

DW also said that the felt plugs on the MB cap sides are a problem to get sealed. Said they leave the felt out & fill the holes solid with sealer.

I guess it's whatever you think will work the best.
