"Crank Scraper?"

OK - I think I know the reaction, but anybody have any experience with this? I've seen it advertised on e-bay, and wondered about it. (No plans to install, just curious.)

Re: "Crank Scraper?"

I saw it also, Mickey, & chuckled!

Geez, sounds kind of painful to me.

but seriously, it serves the same purpose as a windage tray. It heps keep oil where it should be, in the pan, rather than flying around all over the crankcase. It's pretty old stuff, but I kind of doubt it adds any measurable power. I've usually seen them and windage trays advertised more to help prevent oil starvation in hard cornering by making sure every possible drop of oil is available to be pumped through the system.

Re: "Crank Scraper?"

I have read that a test engine was equipped with a plastic viewing window to see what goes on in the pan/crankcase.

When the engine was running, they observed a huge "ball" of oil sticking to the crankshaft & rotating with it. Obviously a lot of air in the oil, windage losses, & very little oil left in the pan for the pump to pick up.

Many high performance engines go to great lengths to provide windage trays & or scrapers to keep this oil away from the crank.

Wouldn't the tabs on the Neon engine gasket wear out eventually? Or am I misunderstanding the photograph and they don't actually "scrape" anything? I would think that they'd lose their effectiveness pretty quickly.

The scraper blades don’t actually scrape anything solid. A crank splashing around in oil will whip it up like a milkshake. The scraper blades are set very close to the moving parts but not touching so that only a thin film remains after passing by. The oil is “scraped” down into the pan where it belongs.

Re: "Crank Scraper?"

I guess my concern is the tolerance - the clearance between the "scraper" and the crank counterweights. I understand the effectiveness of a tray in the oil pan to cut down on turbulence, but the thought of those counterweights spinning at speed and being anywhere near anything but oil bothers me a bit.

Re: "Crank Scraper?"

Well, with stock suspension & brakes & all the comfort weight of an MGB, would there really be any advantages to one? Now, if a person was pushing the engine & suspension/brakes to the max, lightening the car to bare minimum & trying to beat other cars in class on an open track, maybe...but if that's al you do to an engine???

Re: "Crank Scraper?"

not worth taking the pan off unless you turn high RPMs regularly, but it wouldn't hurt if you were rebuilding the engine anyway
