TR2/3/3A Crank bolt

The odd looking bolt on the end of the fan hub,
what's the best way to remove it, I'm trying to
get to my timing chain.

My vote is for a 6-point socket (the corners of the head are deliberately rounded, making a 12 point apt to slip), and an air impact wrench. Works a treat, every time.

2nd choice is the same socket, with a breaker bar and a length of pipe for a cheater. If everything is installed and in good shape, you can maybe lock the engine by putting gearbox in 4th and setting the hand brake firmly; or use the rope trick.

If those don't work out, position the breaker bar near (or on) the frame rail on the LH side and hit the starter.
 
Rarely do I disagree with anyone as knowlegable as Randall, but if you use the starter and break a tooth on the ring-gear
you wil be more than sorry.

The trick in undoing this is my experience is to lock the crank as solidly as possible. I was a bit surprised that a guy in the UK did this OK with the rope trick. i had to drop the pan and clamp a bar across the flanges. Then show it 3/4 drive socket and a big bar and it will undo itself.

True, but I know lots of people that have done it this way, and no one reported breaking a tooth. If you think about it, every time you start the engine, the starter slams into the ring gear with everything it has in the way of torque and the engine stationary. The gears are designed to take that kind of abuse.

Same with the rope trick. The pistons get pounded thousands of times a minute with blows much stronger than what you are going to generate. They aren't made of paper mache
 
I'm not sure I understand the rope trick as it relates to removing the crank bolt.
Can anybody explain?
I'll be removing the oil pan anyway to replace the pistons and that sounds like
the way I might try to remove the crank bolt.

Have number one piston short of tdc on the compression stroke. Make sure both valves are closed. Thread rope in through the spark plug hole. When the piston gets towards tdc it will jam against the rope and stop movement of the crank.
 
I put a good size pipe wrench on the fan extension and used an electric torgue wrench with 6 point socket and it came off good. a few dings in the fan extension but not bad.

I got it off with a pipe wrench and an adjustable wrench.
