COVID Permitting - Northward

Earlier this year we were booked on a Cruise to Mexico for my wife’s high school reunion. Everything was a go for a March departure when COVID hit and upended those plans. Some class members just got a refund, but others (us) opted to keep our money with the cruise line for use with a future cruise.

Since we live in New Mexico, we felt that a trip to Mexico would not be as exciting for us as it might be for her classmates from other states. So, we have decided to book an 8-day cruise to Alaska instead. Coincidentally, the cruise we booked (in May) will coincide with our 46th anniversary.

It looks like there will be ample opportunity for a wide variety of photography, so I’m trying to decide on a reasonable set of gear to take that will not overload me but give me ample opportunity for a wide range of photo options. I may end up renting a 100-400mm lens for teh occasion as my 150-600 is probably too big to lug around when we're with a group of other people.

Of course this all hinges on whether the COVID restrictions are lifted by this summer. Fingers crossed.

Alaska is a great State and shipboard is easy way to go. Are you doing inland passage or Homer?? Summer has long days so getting photo light right takes time but well worth it and it will rain. Hope it will be safe to go next year. I lived there before the pipe line and have gone fishing an number times in the last ten years. Madflyer

Sounds like an excellent trip Bas. Taking an Alaska cruise is something I'd like to do someday myself.

If you can, I'd opt for adding on a train to Denali (and Fairbanks).
