Is this steel support of the cover original factory?....see pics. or should there be a rectangular steel frame attached to the cover.

Mine (an original '64) has metal along the sides - but that may be a variation introduced during the production run.

Note how, when the boot lid is fully raised, you can tuck the edge of the cover behind the boot lid cross brace and it will hold the cover in an upright position.

PS - Another difference I now see: Mine has locating pegs on the body that engage holes in the metal side pieces to securely locate the cover. Again, possibly introduced later in production.

Mine seems to be different than both. I think it is original to the car. I don't remember replacing it in the 45 years I've owned the car, but maybe.

Here is my cover from a late 62 build, sold in 63 car. This is the original. Mine needs to be restored obviously. May just buy some wood, paint it, and transfer over everything else after it's repainted. My other picture of the back was too large, but on the sides mine has black felt along the sides unlike metal from Geo Hahns picture.

I have been trying to find some small 'C' section metal that I can use as an edge around the sides as shown in Geo Hahn's pics...no luck as yet...I may fold up some from flat sheet.

Mark -

Mine looks identical to yours. There's no evidence of a brace ever running beneath. Mine is May of 62, CT9796L.

This is not for the purists, but did the cover this way using a strip of round edge ceramic tile edge strip riveted to the fibreboard together with strips of thin rubber glued under the sides....see pics.
Still to attach the tie down clips.
