Couple of questions re: 1960 Sprite

The Bugeye I am very interested in has a few odd things, or mayb not; I am hoping this forum will help answer them.

On the cowl right before the windshield on the passenger side is a black plug about 1" in diameter or so. Owner claims it is the antenna delete; I've not seen that before. Also, there is a radio delete plate in place on the drive shaft tunnel under ther dash. I thought the radio was usually in the dash in front of the passenger.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Steve T.

Yes the antenna was mounted on the cowl on the passenger side but was only present when a radio was installed, i.e., no plug from the factory. A PO probably removed the radio and antenna and installed the plug in the existing hole.

In early bugeyes there was a small counsel that mounted on the tranny tunnel at the bulkhead that would house the radio and one speaker. Never seen a 'blanking' plate for these counsels. There were aftermarket blanking plates to cover the hole in the dash when a radio was removed, maybe thats what you have in what sounds like an original radio counsel.

Plug is fine, radio mount on tunnel bulkhead is after market. Enjoy.

Hey, thanks for the info. The more I investigate the better it sounds. Does anyone know of a reputable inspection company to look at this Sprite? It is in MA near Providence, RI. I looked into flights from Dayton, OH; $500 even 30 days out, plus the cost of a rental and potential overnight and such. I have looked at carchex.com and for $149.00 they will do a pretty comprehensive inspection; anyone have experience with them?

Again, thanks for any and all info; looking forward in getting back the LBC scene.

I've not used an official inspection service, but when I bought my Bugeye I asked on this board, and a really nice chap went and looked it over for me. I was leery of using one of the inspection outlets, as they might not know much about old British cars. If you ask around on this board, someone out that way might be able to look at it for you. There are a couple of RI and MA members on the board (I'm from RI originally, but now live in UT so I'm not of much help here). Good luck, and let us know what you find out.

I'm in MA on the South Shore of Boston; if you'd like me to take a look let me know. The sellers name wouldn't happen to be Joe would it?

Chris,

Thanks for the offer; however, the car is in Sekonk, MA. at a dealer. His name is Dave. I've talked to him a couple of times and he seems OK, you just neve know though. I looked into flying into Boston and renting but by the time I added everything up it added another $500+. He is suppose to send some more pictures, but have not seen them yet. How much a trip would it be for you if I might ask?

Thanks -- Steve

It's about 40 miles / a hour away. I'd be happy to look at it if you'd like, just let me know. I'm always up for a trip like that. Do you know if he has a lighted space to look at it? It gets dark here by 5:00. If not next Saturday would be the best.

Thanks, I'll let you know soon as to what I am doing about the car. He is supposed to email me more pictures and he has done so yet, supposed to be last night. I'll get back to you soon. Again, thanks I really appreciate the effort; I'd be happy to do the favor for anyone that wants an inspection in the Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky corner of the world. I am in Dayton and would travel an hour or so to aid another LBC fanatic.

Thanks -- Steve
