TR2/3/3A Correct trafficator control head?

The trafficator that came in my 60 TR 3A with an adjustable steering column does not have the chrome ring around the horn button so I set out to install one from some spare parts. When I took the control head out of the steering wheel I noticed that it is slightly different from my spare parts trafficator control head. The stub on the control head that slides into the main stator tube in my column is 6.5" long whereas the stub on my spare control head which has the chrome ring in the center is only about 2" long. Where there different trafficators made for these cars? Can I use the control head with the shorter stub? My main stator tube is 61.5" long. If I use the control head with the short stub and my existing main stator tube the unit will be 4.5" shorter. Will it be long enough to go thru the steering box? The car was disassembled when I got it so I don't know what the steering column looked like when it was installed. It is the split column. Thanks again for your help and have a good day!

I ran into this last year. The short tube is for the non-adjustable trafficator. The longer is for the adjustable. The tube assembly can be removed and swapped for your longer tube by simple removing 3 screws. Otherwise they are identical parts.

What he said. But the stub & stator tube need to match; and the adjustable wheel needs the long stub/short tube (unless you never adjust the wheel).

What they said. I think, though, if one head is better than the other, you can just take the chrome ring out and put it in the better head. disassemble carefully, there are springs in the turn signal mechanism. Not a fun thing to have to remove over again to get the little parts in the right order and direction. Any I have seen with the chrome ring missing, was just that...the chrome ring missing.

I did notice when disassembling mine that there are slight differences internally. So, some parts are completely interchangeable, like the locator tube, but some parts are not, like the cancelling cams. I do not know if the differences are early to late, or OEM to Repo. I just know there are some differences.
