correct tires for BJ-7

Reid--

I believe these are the same tires Michael Salter uses on AHX 12 in the Targa Newfoundland Rallye. My recollection from Michael's remarks during Targa sections (when we would often be starting from cold conditions)is that they were a bit slow to warm but once at temp were good in both the dry and the wet. You may want to check with Salter.

The tires were on at least their third season when I was last on board in 2008, but Michael seemed to feel they had another event left in them and was using them this year before retiring.

They have an aggressive yet traditional appearance. I imagine that your car, being a BN2, has a higher cut wheel opening than does my BN1 but perhaps once you get the tires fit we oould establish some points of reference relative to the hubs or some other points to see if there would be any problems with close fit, etc. Also what front brakes are you using and have you made any changes in wheel spacing/set-back?

Good luck with them.

I can recommend following set-up for excellent performance:
Rims 5.5x15
Tyres 185/70R15 89H Avon CR6 ZZ

They are great! Although it is rather a sportive than a budget set-up...

I just checked these on line. They have a treadware rating of 80. I would not expect more than 10,000 miles out of a set, and I would not be shocked to hear they lasted only 5,000 miles.

The Targa encompasses about 2500 miles en toto with lots of it at high speeds on lousy roads and most of it at highway speeds on average or poor by US standards. Your figures might be a bit low but in any case if anyone is interested I would say that Salter is the man to talk with.

Very likely.

It seems like the non-American Healey folks all swear by these tires. Not sure why they are almost unknown here. It's not like we already have tons of great choices for tires anymore.

I don't put tons of miles on my BN2 and I don't drive it all that aggressively. They are probably way more tire than I need, but as long as I am in need of a new set of tires I'm going to try them and see what all the rage is about.

I am slightly concerned that they are a lower-profile than I would ideally like to have. I really like the appearance of the olde Dunlop original-equipment bias-ply tires.

The brakes are original and I haven't made any changes to wheel spacing or anything.

Thanks... I hope I don't need it!

I'm thinking about them. 10,000 miles would be about 5 to 10 year on my car when it is done. The tires would probably dry rot before they wore out.

Hi Legal Bill,

German regulations are quite strikt. They need to stay within the wheel wells otherwise the car will not past TUEV... I have them mounted on a BJ8 and I know many who drive them on older Healeys.

Thank you, Fortius. I have a nice new set of chrome 72 spoke daytons that are sealed to eliminate the need for an inner tube. I think 185s would be great, so long as they fit within the wheel wells.

Reid,

FWIW, I did the math and the difference is sidewall height is a mere 2.5mm. That, of course, does not mean the two tires would actually measure the exact dimensions suggested by the tire size. I have found that tires of the exact same size will still have different size contact patches and different sidewall heights. But on paper a 165 80 has a sidewall height of 132mm, while a 185 70 will have a sidewall height of 129.5mm
