TR2/3/3A Correct thickness for wire wheel spacers [3A]?

Would anyone know the correct thickness for wire wheel spacers for a 3A - 1959? I've seen reference to 3, 6 and 9mm. Also, anyone done this and did you get any fender rub?

I know a guy who can make these on a favor and it saves me changing out the existing studs,

I vaguely remember several factory service bulletins IMPLORING eveyone to shorten the wheel studs by around 5/16" before installing wire wheel adaptors, but I'll have to double-check that measurement later today or tomorrow (bulletins not handy at the moment).
 
If you look at the track of the car in the specifications, it appears that the wire wheeled cars are 1/2" wider. So my guess would be 1/4" spacer + - .
 
I use a set of 6mm spacers... which is 1/4".

Leaves a bit of stud just beyond the bevel nut, which is what you are trying for.

One well-read reference says 9mm but I think that is either a typo or someone who is metric-challenged.

Err, that's a good theory, but the original setup didn't use spacers ... the wire wheels just have more offset than the steel wheels.

However, 1/4" should do. The original factory disc wheel studs were not threaded all the way to the end, and the 5/16" measurement includes that unthreaded portion. But, you don't want the adapter nuts "hanging out in space", so the spacers need to be a little thinner.

Tire clearance will depend on your choice of tires; but I would guess that even 185s will still clear OK.

I will assume the offset is different from my steels since I only have clearence in the back for a half inch or about 10mm,

1/2"? I have about 2" of clearance tween the tire and the rear wing with disc wheels (165x15). The adaptor set-up will yield a wider track.
 
Or mayber later TR4 rims and wider tires?

This is an old thread but perhaps Andrew is still around.
If the car has a TR4 rear end, how much wider would it be than the TR3 rear end?

Hi Bob,

Others will jump in here and correct me if I am wrong but I beleive that the TR4 axle is 3 inches wider than the TR3.

I thought it was 4", but I just checked and according to the books, it's only 3" in the rear. The front track increased by 4".

Yes the TR4 has 3" wider rear track.
TR3 rear track is 45.5 "
TR4 rear track is 48.5 "
I tried to get the diff. number off the diff. but am unable to read it.
Where is this track dimension measured?
From outer edges of tire tread?
From middle of tire tread?
From outer edges of brake drums?
Perhaps someone will measure their TR3 rear track & respond.

Track is normally measured from tire center to tire center.

The 45.5" number appears to be for the earlier "Lockheed" axle; Practical Hints 6th ed give either 45" (disc wheels) or 46" (wire wheels).

I just measured a "Girling" axle as 41-3/4", from brake mounting flange to brake mounting flange.
