Correct Lube for Steering Box/Rack?

Hi

What's the thought for lubricating the steering box/rack on a TR4A? My workshop manual calls for 4-5 pumps from a grease gun per year (which is what I have been doing the past 10 years). I rotate the wheel from lock-to-lock while doing this.

However, I have also seen references to using gear oil (i.e. 80/90 wt GL4). I can see how gear oil would flow into the far reaches of the rack better but, it sounds really messy and more prone to leaking out the boots.

Any thoughts?

Bob

Use the grease. GL4 is too thin. I prefer the Valvoline Lithium Grease myself.
