Correct engine number help

Here is the number that is stamped on a thin strip on my engine. 29K RU H/2855

Is that the correct number?

I need to order a water pump for my car. Moss motors reference numbers do not look like my engine number.

My BJ8 was built 27 July 1964. Vin H-BJ8-L/28061

Are they asking for vin number or engine number?

Can someone tell me which part number from moss is the correct water pump for me?

The cap on the radiator reads 7 pounds.

Also, views on which thermostat I should get? The expensive 160 degree one for 38.95 or the cheaper 6 dollar one. Do you really get what you pay for? What is the difference?

Thanks guys, Roger

Hi Roger,
I'll leave the engine number to others.

The Healey head has a bypass port for the thermostat when it is closed. This allows some water circulation through the engine when the thermostat is closed. The cheap thermostat allows coolant to bypass the radiator, via recirculation back through the head, even when the thermostat is open. The "expensive" thermostat has a sleeve on it which blocks off the bypass so that all coolant goes through the radiator when the thermostat is open. If you have a borderline overheating problem, the sleeved thermostat, as originally intended, will help.

Hi Roger,

Yes, the engine number is on the thin metal strip riveted to the block. It looks like you need 835-020 which works up to 29-K-H10271 since yours is 29-K-H2855. You can also double check by looking at illustration 61 and 62 for type of pully you have and measure yours).

Cheers,
John

Watch out now Roger!.Usually the only criteria for a water pump compatible with a BJ8/29K engine is the width of the fan belt used on the engine. be sure and check it because the PO may have changed the vibration damper and the car is not to original specification. However, if you happen to have a 3/8" belt on your car a pump with a 1/2" pulley will work fine and speed the circulation up a bit.--Fwiw--Keoke

OK guys, let me bring you up to speed as why I am confused. Relating to the Healey... keep on track.

Attached above, is a photo of my Pulley.

It looks like Moss's part number 835-035. Link here:
https://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=28860&SortOrder=55

Records from PO shows he purchased a water pump from Moss part number 580-010

That pump seems to be for BJ8 from 29K-H10272. My engine number is 29K RU H/2855

The mesurement of the top of my belt is 7/16. Hence between the 3/8 and 1/2.

Am I missing something here?
Are his records wrong and he returned that pump and got the other one? Don't see any invoices showing he did that.

What if I removed the one I have. How will I know which one it is? That would be the simple solution, no?

Dazed and confused, Roger

OK, I'll admit it. I just came back, hence the edit, to say that because of the wonderful people here helping me figure this... learn as you go, restoration; I am actually enjoying the learning curve here, vs stressing out. Cheers and thanks for your continuing support.

HI Roger, I would not worry about the engine number bit,it appears that you have a 1/2" belt on your car so just order a BJ8 water pump with a 1/2" pulley on it Moss Part # 580-010 and you will be set to go.I should mention if the belt is not too old the width of it should be printed someplace on it on the outside---Keoke

Gang,

I am having the same kind of issue with my water pump as ASUMHLY.
My BJ8 VIN number is 36081 and engine number is 10730.The fan belt 3/8" even though the book says 1/2" after 10271.
I ordered a pump with the 3/8" pulley and have not installed it yet.
Are we to take it that BOTH pumps will fit onto the engine but the only difference is the pully width on the end?
If that is the case then what would it matter as long as the pulleys functioned normally?

Well lets see Scot, if you have a 3/8" belt on your engine and you are not hung up on originality.Either pump will work just fine on your car. However, if you have a 1/2" belt on then you are limited to using the pump with the 1/2" pulley.Yes Physically the pumps are the same and either pump will fit on the engine and the significant difference is only the width of the pulley on the end.---Keoke

Gentlemen:

Suggest all of visit My Site and read about the water pump fitment. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angel.gif

HI Scot, generally there is nothing earth shatteringly wrong with the pumps that is not easily corrected.Sometimes the bottom edge of the pump casting will hang up on the timing chain cover because the arch has not been relieved enough.Grinding this area slightly will relieve this obstruction.--Keoke
