TR2/3/3A Correct Colors for Hoodstick and Sidescreen Mounts?

I'm in the process of re-doing the interior on my '58 TR3A. I want to repaint the hoodsticks and the mounts on the door panels for the sidescreens. I have a black interior. Are these originally flat black, shiny black, or something else? Anything special I need to know about repainting these?

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill,

The hood stick I believe should be "Body Color". The side curtain mounts I believe should be a "Natural" silver / polished.

if I'm wrong; I'm certain someone will confirm the above or correct me.

regards, Russ

I agree with Russ. Piggott notes that some cars did come through with black sticks and I think the judging standards reflect that but everything that I've seen were body color. I used the silver wheel paint on the curtain mounts. Tom

I've seen all sorts of treatments on the side curtain mounts. I went with a nickel plating and no polishing for a durable natural metal appearance. Have seen some painted and some chromed.

I used Hammerite silver on the sides creen mounts. Whatever you use, let them dry (outgas) for at least 1 week so the paint hardens completely.

If you paint something that is doomed to be chipped in every day use, you will hate yourself latter.
Plate the bits that take the hits!!!! Sure its nicer than new/over restored, but what of that??? Mark
your car your own!!! There is such a thing as being too much of a freak for "originality"

I have seen numerous hoodsticks with their original paint and every one was painted sandlewood (beige/tan). Art

Piggott mentions the tan also. Perhaps even later than Andy suggests? I've three sets, all between 70000 and my 73117, all body color. At least this will give me something to look for at Stowe this year. Tom

Early 3A hoodsticks could be satin or gloss black finish depending on what could be procured cheapest. Later 3A's had light tan to match the natural canvas backing material of the vynil.

The Dzuz type sidescreen mounts on the inside of the doors could be matte light gray or metallic silver. The finish of choice for restored cars is invariably chrome plating.

At one time, I owned TS71909L, original green car with possibly original green hoodsticks; and TS73624L, original white car with apparently original tan hoodsticks. TCF1564L also had tan hoodsticks, which I would expect on a mid-production 3B.
