Correct bugeye bellhousing exhaust bracket?

Hello,
I had thought my exhaust bracket was beyond repair. After seeing how much it would be for another one, I decided to take a second look. It was bent backwards at a 45 degree angle and twisted pretty bad. After digging through my parts, I came across another bracket I forgot I had from a 59 bugeye. After being patient and shaping the metal, I can see that all I will need to do is weld a small piece on once I can find the right thinkness of metal. My question is this. The bracket from the 59 (on the left) is longer than the one on my car, a 60 (on the right). Were the brackets different for each year? If not, which one is stock? Thanks for your help as always.
Kevin

The one on my 63 looks more like the one on the left with the slightly longer arm.

Kevin,
One of my AKD books (Issue 2) lists two part numbers with 5 different change points. I honestly don't know if I'm reading it 100% correctly but there are at least two part numbers listed for MKI sprite. AHA 5238 and AHA 5361.
If Bryan's bracket looks like the one to the left then I’d say that one is the AHA 5361. AHA 5361 shows fitting some HAN5’s as well as HAN6 / HAN7 and GAN1 / GAN2.

Again if I’m reading this correctly HAN5 chassis 5137, 5287 and 5288 and all chassis from 5477 to 50116 had the AHA 5361.
These numbers go in connection with change points listed to the exhaust pipe. So ask your self, what style of pipe is being sold as stock?
There, for what it’s worth, bit more information that still leads to the same end. Both of them will work with a bit of fettling.

The one on the right looks identical to the one on the left except that the one on the right has the tip broken off. You really should have two holes to bolt it to the transmission or it won't hold the exhaust properly.

Bill, this is like one of those cartoon puzzles where you have to compare both pictures to see what is different. It is more than the tip being broken. If you look closely, the longer narrow portion that extends toward the exhaust pipe is longer on the left bracket. I do plan on welding a small piece of metal to restore that section so that is bolted with two bolts. I was just curious as to why they were different.

Dug, what is an AKD book? In any case, what you stated would make sense then for there being two different brackets. The bracket on the left is from AN5L/5337. The one on the right is from AN5L/21339.

Thanks for your help. At least after finding the second bracket I can repair the one I have now that belongs on my car. And getting a new or used bracket would have been a shot in the dark as well as expensive.

Kevin,
If I remember correctly, these are both most likely smoothcase brackets or possibly reproductions. The bracket for the 1098 cars with the ribcase have a curved cutout between the holes so it will clear one of the ribs on the tranny.

The picture above is of a friends car with the correct 1098 bracket.
Here is a picture of mine with a smoothcase style bracket that modified by cutting the clearance notch into. Notice it is the longer type.

(Yes, that is a Austin A-35 clamp on there too! :banana:smile:

Thanks for the pictures. I do have the smooth case transmissions. They both seemed to fit ok on the perspective cars. What I will do is repair/paint both and just see which one fits the best once I get the engine in.
