Cooling fan options

If you are in a hot climate I think I would label those 2 fans 'Not Enough' and 'Not Nearly Enough'.

The TR4 fan has more blade (which should be better) but also hangs a lot more aluminum out beyound the steel cruciform which may make that design more vulnerable to flexing, fatigue and breaking.

I've never had issues with overheating before, even during the warmest PA summer. However, my motoring is mainly rural roads. I hope that the problem is solved between the bent fan blade, weak but still partly working thermostat, the cardboard shroud needing replacement, radiator flush and an upgraded water pump

As an aside, the upgraded water pump has clearance issue with the pulley. Grr.

On a lot of the water pumps available the rear edge of the pulley fouls on the casting of the pump body. I usually have to grind off quite a bit of metal from that one spot to get the pulley fully seated and freely spinning.

Much easier to do with the pump off the engine. Even on the spare I take on long trips I did a test fit of the pulley and then the grinding so it would be ready when needed.
 
My 4A came from the US with the fan and extension missing and an electric pusher fan. I had read of the balance problems with the standard fan and extension and decided not to replace it. I also went to a crank damper (ex MGB I think - wash my mouth out!) and narrow belt conversion so I could not refit the fan anyway. The car would run a bit hot on hot days here in Oz but the fan cooled it down. I had had the radiator cleaned and rebuilt and a Mitsubishi thermo switch built in as part of the rebuild of the car.

The car went back to the guy who did the body after a ladder fell on it in the garage. Grrrr. He removed the (very) old electric pusher fan and put a new fan behind the radiator ie a pull fan. The car now runs noticeably cooler and no longer sounds like a B47 when the fan cuts in. Guess it makes sense to have the fan behind the radiator to allow maximum flow.

That's been my experience as well, having a pusher in front of the radiator seems to upset the air flow at higher speeds.
