TR6 Coolant Temp Q

My TR6 only gets to about 1/3 the way up the temp gauge unless I’m sitting in traffic on a hot day. Once I start moving it drops back to about 1/3 of the way on the gauge. I’ve changed the temp sensor and the thermost and there is no change. I wouldn’t worry about it, but the engine clearly runs better when it’s hot and the gauge is showing half way. I’m running a 180 degree thermostat, should I change to a 195? Do you think it will be too hot day? Anyone else had this problem? Thanks!

It could still be the sensor...I know this one is puts the needle close to the middle of my gauge...but the main thing I think would be to find out what the actual temp is no matter where the needle points.
 
Thanks. I might try a new sensor, they’re cheap. But the car seems to really prefer to run hot (middle of the gauge). Much less missing in the mid RPM ranges and just smoother overall. The problem is I can’t keep it in the middle of the gauge, it drops back to 1/3 as soon as I get out of traffic and get the RPMs up a little. Any experience with a 195 thermostat? And, the engine is freshly rebuilt with a new radiator, so everything should be clean inside.

I went from a 165 to a 185 thermostat and my gauge went from just below center to just above center ( 1973 TR6 ) Is it a OEM radiator or Alum.
Running cold is not normal but you have to check real temp try a meat thermometer at the radiator with cap off. Check number two: with motor cold remove cap and start motor you should not see any water flow until steam comes out that will tell thermostat is working normally
 
I put in a 195 thermostat and it now goes to the middle of the gauge. And the most important part, the engine runs much smoother at that higher temp. I’m leaving it alone now, especially as we get into fall, it should be good.
