Converting Rear Reflector to working lamp

Dave,
Do you think the 20 watt bulbs would work OK? I can't find the 10 watt bulbs anywhere.

I like this idea!

Hi Lin,
I think 20 watt might get pretty hot & it may overload your electrics - turn blinker or brake switch, depending on how you plan to use them.

The guy in the "how to" used 10 watt type MR11 bulbs with bi pin base. MR11 describes a general bulb shape. There are MR11's available in a number of different wattages. Some even available with LED's. They are used for low voltage home accent lighting & display lighting. Give some of the home electric supply stores a look. You should be able to find some there.

You can get an idea about them here:

Bob, Ed , my car has disc wheels but my spare is bent. I may see if they can true it for me, thanks Bob

When you get ready to buy new tires and have them properly installed, balanced , and trued, drive down to Hendrix Wire Wheel. They do 1st class work and I really like their Gillet tires. It was more than worth the drive and time.

HI BlueRidge1, Solid disk wheels are very easily repaired. If Hendrix does not do them I am sure you can find a local outfit that does.Check with the Hot Rod guys too.--Fwiw---Keoke

Well us fellas with the late BJ8 cars have all those lights on em plus the reflectors. The problem as I see it is the rubber housings on the reflectors fail with time and are not attainable as spare items.Cosidering that a replacement reflector can set you back about $28.95 I needed a more reasonable fix for them.So for $3.75 you can refurbish them. No SHG!, they are not available at the local pet shop!.Just order a rubber tail light boot Moss Part No 280-520. Cut the inner lip flush with the back, next cut the boot off flush with the back side. Now install the reflector and lock the chrome ring inplace by lifting the remaining rubber lip over the edge of the chrome ring. It can now be reinstall on the bumper bracket-good as new.---Fwiw---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Yeah Anthony, cuz the only way you would be able to communicate would be with a keyboard!--Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Thanks Keoke, they are getting hard to find, I know of a local shop that used to widen our race car wheels years ago before racing wheels were easy to come by,I'll give them a call. Bob

Bob,

Emil Hansen had a disc wheel he wanted to sell. I do not know if it has been sold. Emil phone # is 434-237-4042.
He lives in Lynchburg, Va.

What about LED's? Instead of the 10watt halogen. I found a bulb at Autozone. It's made by JamStrait. It's a tailight, directional/stoplight bulb. It has something like 6-8 small LED's that fit in the area of a normal bulb. I called Jamstrait and was told it puts out 120 milli amps.

Also told it will be brighter, cooler and that's a plus.

I too am concerned about blowing fuses. So, views on the LED?

HI ASUMHLY, That specification { 120 MilliAmps } you were given is the total current drawn by the lead when energised. Consequently, it will run much cooler than a conventional bulb capable of producing the same level of brightness---Keoke

Well ASUMHLY,For most of your applications I think you will find their 1157 series has the broadest application.---Keoke

I don't know if you guys noted that the MR11 that was in the original discussion has a built in reflector. Makes the installation easier & more effective. The overall diameter is about 1 1/4 inches. It will fit in the housing.

I have also discovered how easy it is to break off the pins of the MR11 10 watt halogen bulb. Does anyone have a source for the connector that fits this bulb ? I squeezed the spade terminal too much so when I pushed it on to the pin, it exerted too much force. I guess I can search the web but if anyone knows where to get the connector that is designed for these bulbs, please post the info for all of us. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/computer.gif

HI ED_K, Check Dave's post above on 12 /18 /05 they list sockets.---Keoke
